Preseason number 9

For not being in a marquee early season tourney, we definitely have a tougher non conf schedule.
Should help RPI later

Wait a minute... how can we be the 9th ranked team in the country? We can't recruit. We can't coach - too inflexible/stubborn. We are too slow, can't shoot. can't make plays. What the heck are they thinking? Number 9? Who writes these things and why haven't they read this board for the "real scoop" from our experts?

Boy, this is inconvenient for some of the harshest critics.

The "critics" aren't worried about this year.

It's about what this team will look like in two years, if the recruiting well dries up.

That's when the 2017 recruiting class will rear it's head, in a good or bad way, depending on how that class shapes up.

I am personally glad we are playing a more difficult preseason schedule. You don't learn a lot when you win by 40 against lesser teams. I will be more impressed if we can make the Elite 8 or FF at the END of the season rather than number 9 at the beginning.

MSU typically gets some good preseason games and sometimes drops 2 or 3. But they seem to learn from them and turn it on at the end of the season. I definitely don't want to lose these preseason games but I'd gladly trade them for a run in March. The national exposure sure will be nice though.

well hang a banner...I care more about how we finish.

We all care more about how we finish. But it's September so we talk about the circumstance today.

I'm surprised a Purdue grad would struggle with that difference.
I'm happy we're highly rated. I'm not going to use that as a weapon against the programs detractors that have very valid points. That's the difference. Some high horses around here.

Speak for yourself. I'm concerned about 2023. It appears to me that our lack of commitments doesn't bode well for that year going forward.

Not a commitment for 2024 either. It's going to be a dark time, I'm sure! We have finished last in the BIG before, so I am sure it will happen again... just cause!

You guys realize that by 2023 and 2024, we'll have new coach by then. Look at the Bobinski article about how he wants to go from good to great.

No need for sarcasm! Some people may hate for their own reasons, but they are opinions. No opinions are wrong on this board. Only people who call out others with illogical insults. Mathboy I love how you stay level headed, but for the time being let's enjoy the preseason hype and be ready for a good season! (Which I know you're happy about)

You're new here, go back and read some of the old threads before you joined. There is a good reason for the sarcasm. The negativity gets pretty over the top at times, especially when it comes to CMP and recruiting. I fell into the "negativity vortex" about a month ago. I would like to give credit for the phrase but can't remember who said that to me.

just a little correction...in every day...in every way...there are wrong opinions. They existed before me and will exist after me. I know you are fine with what I'm saying, but having an eye to see and an ear to hear I'm aware of things that have went on in the government schools to program people into thinking all opinions are worthy and that is simply not true. It is impossible to have constructivism (higher thought) without the relevant knowledge in the appropriate domain. Unless we believe that that knowledge happened through Osmosis. If a player doesn't understand man "D" concepts and doesn't understand pure zone concepts, that player will have a hard time constructing a match-up zone. There are many examples where people assume their opinion has merit and do not have the knowledge base to have an informed opinion. That is not to suggest that only those with coaching experience have worthy thoughts, because others certainly do. It is only to suggest that there are many wrong opinions that exist in all of life.

Again, not directed at you...just tuned in to some of what went on in the government schools to diminish "knowledge" which is "kinda" a dirty word anyhow... :)

It was Statey......

There's also "negativity" as opposed to legitimate criticism. At times for me, it's more the "frustration vortex." Changes.....or positive results don't always come at the time or the times or with the swiftness we prefer.

I don't disagree with your larger point. The negativity vortex can get to a person if you let it. I'm not defending the negativity, but in fairness to DG, there was no mention of Painter in his response. I don't think it's a surprise to anyone that for years the athletic department has had a mild case of identify crisis going on with poor marketing campaigns (Makers All, is that even still around any more?), poor ability to connect with fans, give them the gameday experiences the want, etc. Maybe it's hard to separate the sweeping discontent into the components to which it truly relates anymore, but I took his comment to be more a shot at the misguided marketing arm of the athletic office. Just my 2 cents to clarify my earlier comment. But again, your broader point is not lost on me.

There's a third grader in my kid's rec league who's awesome. He doesn't even know who Painter is. We're doomed.

People can be wrong. It happens all the time and especially on this board.

Yeah, someone on here posted that Purdue football has a good chance to be in all it's games this year, and the football team has a chance to win eight game.

I also think someone said that there is no doubt that Painter will lead Purdue to a Final Four. Yes, people can be wrong on here.

Here illustrates my point. You are wrong. I said nothing of the kind regarding the football team. I have said that a good team would have a chance to win any game on our schedule and I have said that I hoped we would be a good team (shouldn't this be something all Purdue fans hope for??) but that doesn't equate into me predicting that our team would be in every game. Don't try to twist things because I didn't join you in throwing an online tantrum every game all season long. I chose to give this team a chance at the beginning of the season and not condemn them based on their past and many of you chose to start the season with a countdown of how long it would take before you could get rid of Hazell.

I did say that about Painter though and I stand by it. Absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

Again, I think people are confusing choosing with predicting. Did I think it was a long shot miracle that Hazell would put forth a season to save his job? Of course. If you had read my thoughts throughout his entire time at Purdue that would be obvious.

That said, I would have rather been proven wrong and seen Hazell win a bunch this season so that's what I chose to cheer for until it was no longer possible. If you went into this season choosing to cheer for us to fail and just throw an online tantrum after every game (which is exactly what many here were doing after wins and losses) then you're just a very sad person. You didn't know any more than the people who chose to still support the team, you just displayed a different attitude and outlook.

just having a little fun. a change had to be made.

Same here....I've always liked CDH and the way he represented himself and the University.....I wish DH well; don't know if he'll get another head coaching job like Purdue, but he had enough contract protection that he should be ok for a while anyway. I had hoped he could be the one to turn things around. But, it became quite clear (at least to me), he was in over his head and things were not going to improve (recruiting, for instance). Humor seemed like the best option for me.....others may disagree.

Regardless, I will pull for the Boilers until the day I die regardless of who is the coach, AD, or a member of the BOT.

Preseason props are great. This year's team appears to have a great mix of talent, experience, and athleticism. It could be a special year if guard play continues to develop and if Haas can stay out of foul trouble.

That said, this year's team, like last year's team, will be defined by what it does in March. Fair or not, that's reality.
