Practice Video: Bigs... Biggie can get up easily and Taylor looks strong

Biggie has the arse to get in good position, and he really moves better than I remember. He's going to be a load.
Taylor has legitimately put on some muscle, without losing any mobility at all. I like where he's at physique wise.....any one else notice that chip on his shoulder too LOL
Haas in the background looks like he's holding a grapefruit in his hand......

I think some of you are in for a surprise about the PT Taylor receives. I don't see where the minutes are for him this year. Do Hammons/Haas take a cut in minutes at the 5? Or how about CS at the 4, or when Purdue uses VE at the 4 (which will be often). I see Taylor around 5 minutes, max. This isn't his year. He will receive starter minutes next year, but hardly any this year. The practice alone will be substantially beneficial, especially versus NBA talent like Hammons, CS, possibly Haas.

p.s.
my kids ripped my 'g and j' keys off my keyboard, so I had to use some innovative creativity on this post. You wouldn't believe how many times you actually use those 2 letters on a normal basis, especially 'g'. I copied/pasted it on this p.s. part for those who read the first part and said to themselves, "how did you type them then?"

I know it's just a short clip, but Swanigan knows how to use that great base and long arms of his. He'll be much better in Purdue's structured offense than he was in the up and down U19 games. He also looks more fit than I've ever seen him.
+1 on this. It's exactly what I have been telling friends who question his game based on AAU and all-star games. Those games are so guard dominated. There are huge stretches where the bigs don't even touch the ball. Get him in a structured environment that gets him the ball in good positions and he will look like a different player. Can't wait!!

He's a talent without a doubt, but watching the USA basketball, he was often the last guy running down the court during transition. Frankly, he's going to need to pick up the effort at this level because other teams I'm sure have the book on him which will be to make him run and try and tire him out. Not sure JT sees minutes, but people who think Caleb will average 30 minutes as a frosh I think are fooling themselves. Then again, it's hard to tell from just clips of action.

Come on, Ref, call the foul! Brantley is mugging the hell out of our guys!!

He's just getting em ready for Big Ten officiating. Expect contact, and don't expect a call.

It will be really interesting to see how the games with Michigan State and Wisconsin end up, among others.

Of course, those games weren't in season so he wasn't in game shape and had yet to have the luxury of working with Purdue's strength and conditioning team. He's already made great strides since June and the season is still two months away.

Nope. I was referring to your comment about this comment:

So you think he made the National team not in shape?

...other teams I'm sure have the book on him which will be to make him run and try and tire him out.

I know one of the things the team does is have each guy work to improve at the 1 mile run. I think Robbie ran it in just over 5 minutes which seems very good. One thing I've been curious about is... What do the trainers generally do in the off-season to improve stamina in a really big guy (other than just have them play a lot of full court)? Is it advisable to have them out running several miles? Or do they use equipment? Building a base at distance running and then working to improve speed seems like a great thing to do for most, but not sure about a guy 6'10"+.

So you think he made the National team not in shape?
Yes. Compared to what kind of shape he will be in by November. The U19 team needed a big body and he gave them that. The player we saw in AAU and the U19 will look completely different come game time in November. Everybody keeps talking about how different JT looks (and they are right) CS will and already does look just as different. I never said he would play 30 minutes a game. I don't know where that came from. I have never heard anybody on here say he would average 30 minutes a game.

I agree with this. He had already lost a lot of weight by the time the U19 championship was played, but he looks different in the latest video. I actually had to watch it a couple of times to believe it was him (and not just because of his haircut). I've heard really good things about Purdue's strength coach, so it makes sense that he has already made significant improvement in his fitness.

Certainly not in B1G shape. Most kids that age don't understand the level of commitment required in nutrition and conditioning. That's why college programs spend so much money on those programs.
See I don't see it as a question of shape and more a question of learning to go full tilt all the time. Not knocking him as most freshmen don't arrive with a non stop motor. But he needs to develop one as soon as possible.

So you're really questioning his effort and giving no credence to the fact that he might not have physically been able to go for an extended period? Just checking because that's questioning character to me.

Questioning someone's motor to me is questioning their effort, which suggests they are dogging it. If someone does that in a team game, that's a character flaw to me.
I can understand your perspective, but Heller was talking about high school kids in general. They are often not challenged as strongly in high school, and get into bad habits (for lack of a better term). I had this problem academically, and it took me a while to realise that everyone around me at Purdue was just as smart, so I needed to work harder, in every class. It is that revelation that needs to take place with many high school athletes. It is not a matter of character, just they way they think needs to change slightly. Let's call it "Humilty Training".

He questioned Davis' effort and motor his freshman and sophomore seasons, as well. I wouldn't take too much stock in what Heller says about someone's effort.

I agree with the way you put it. As to your first point about Heller taking about high school kids in general, he was pretty specifically talking about Biggie, and he based it on watching games during the summer when most athletes are not in game shape.

No I didn't. Ray was the guy as a frosh who always had the effort part down. I never said here that Caleb won't go full blast but I didn't see it this summer and you don't see it in very many frosh.

Most freshman bigs don't have Hammons and Haas working on them daily once they get on campus. That alone has to be the biggest plus to him getting his mental game in shape.

That is a great point. Very rare for a high ranked big to have that kind of competition every day from day 1.

Gotta figure, though, there might be a few "Sorry bout that, Biggie" comments in the lane.

I hope that Purdue doesn't waste a lot of fouls on the perimeter this season, but I don't mind Swanigan and Haas getting their money's worth down low. Drive the lane at your own risk.

FWIW, Vince and Biggie strolled into the Corec this evening and headed to the courts. Not sure if the joined in, but Vince is every bit of 6'8" and Biggie looks way bigger (but lean and mean). Caleb looks way different than even his U19 size. Looks like he's taking his career trajectory very seriously. One and done?

Swanigan looks great. Him and Hammons are going to be super efficient when they're on the floor together, doubt many teams are equipped to guard them both.
