Polls Week 8

Sucks, but is expected, our offense has be slightly stagnant the last 2 games. Defense has been fantastic. We will pick it up in big ten play I am predicting a top 7 ranking come big ten tourney time.

Perfectly logical. A lot of teams posted double digit wins over top 25 opponents this week.
Flipped places with Providence who whipped up on 6-5 "powerhouse" UMass (at UMass). We'll find out how good the Friars really are on New Years Eve when they play Butler (at Hinkle). Go Bulldogs!

Take this as TIC, but along those same lines, I can see Providence losing and still moving up a few notches, "Because Butler is a great team and playing them should move them up no matter", even though we dropped 5 spots when we got beat. Just my cynicism after being a Boiler fan for a long time.

Nice to see pitt in the top 25, and once Vandy get's their 7ft1 forward back they could be back in the top 25 again as well.

In a couple months, when we are heading into the B1G tourney, I will begin to care about our ranking, we will have finished in the top 3 or better in conference play, played lights out in the tourney, go into the NCAA on a roll. I really believe we are gonna shock and awe people with this team, fasten them seat belts and hang on baby!!!

I get people thinking that rankings don't matter, but they do. Purdue is more known for popcorn and space than sports... and on top of that being thought of as a private institution. Rankings get media time, in our games and others all over the country that we aren't even playing in. Purdue, more that other schools that can rely on tradition and name alone, needs to be ranked to help in recruiting. Will it pay off this year or next, I don't know, but it can't hurt.

I'm with you 100%. These people that keep saying "polls don't matter" or "I don't care where we are ranked until the end of the season" are missing the boat big time. Of course it matters. Just watch ESPN for a half hour and you will see the bottom line scrolling the top 25 scores and schedules. Sometimes they just have the top 10. I have Directv and when you hit the red button that brings up scores and schedules there is a category for top 25.

Just a couple quick examples of exposure for ranked teams vs unranked. Sometimes I think people just like downplaying it because it somehow makes them feel above the fray. I think we all know it does matter just some admit it and others don't.

Rankings do matter, but until we get into the meat of the schedule, they don't! There has been Thanksgiving weekend, the holiday tournaments, the invitationals, the classics, finals week, and now Christmas, and all those things mess with the true rankings of teams. Some teams have yet to play more than 1 true road game, and some have played several.

After we get deep into January, then rankings matter. Not saying the schedule hasn't mattered to this point, but ranking those teams is awfully hard at this point.

Just win all your home conference games, and most of the ones on the road, the rankings will take care of themselves.
