Puzzled as he was getting ample playing time. Maybe not the targets he'd have liked, but it was playing time and a scholarship. Writing might have been on the wall and he bailed before one of the Freshman were going to get more P.T. Everyone makes their own choices, but wonder if he'll look back on this years from now and wonder, "Why did I do that?"
Quitting early is not a good characteristic in life. I could see if he chose at season's end as every year is different. Leaving your teammates while it is heating up is not good.

We are young, but we are deep at that position. Not a big loss. Will help us with our scholarships for this year’s recruiting class.

He could potentially leave school now, enroll late elsewhere, sit this year, and be eligible next year.

Also, players quit all the time for one reason or another. he was 3rd on the depth chart.

we all knew there would be some attrition as witnessed by the current class's players being recruited

Would be better to have both of the freshmen redshirt and play in a few games but keep them eligible. This possibly burns a redshirt year. That’s how I am viewing it anyway.

They can still play 4 and redshirt. Alternatively, they can play one and shirt the other and stagger their classes.

Play the one that is most ready vs. 4 and 4. Staggering the class would be acceptable at this point.
Which way were camp reports leaning towards Kyle Bilodeau or Garrett Miller? Both are 6'5" and similar weight of 245/250. Will be interesting to see who gets the nod on additional P.T. this week.

Imagine he wants to preserve a redshirt year and have 2 left. So he would only want to play in 4 games this year if he stayed the whole season. He was on special teams and would have exceeded that. How would he tell Coach “ hey I only wanna play 4 games this year”. Might as well leave now and get acclimated to a new team early.
