so this is the scandal that actually ruined ricky's stellar rep.
and its obviously not about $44M.
lol

"resulted in grave damage to Coach Pitino's public and private standing and reputation, causing him extreme embarrassment, humiliation and emotional distress."

"This lawsuit is about more than just money; it is Coach Pitino's vehicle for proving that he had nothing to do with Adidas' outrageous, wrongful, and illegal conspiracy,"

This is absolutely hilarious. The ENTIRE WORLD knows about him having sex on a table in a restaurant, why he is nicknamed "Quick Rick", and that his program provided prostitutes to his basketball players. Yet his lawyer (presumably with a straight face) pens this: "... resulted in grave damage to Coach Pitino's public and private standing and reputation, causing him extreme embarrassment, humiliation and emotional distress."

Adidas' lawyers should have a lot of fun with this.

I never studied law but I think I could knock this one out of the park on my own.

Desperate move by a desperate man.
Nope, it's a very smart move by a highly intelligent sleazeball. I take the Louisville Courier Journal and the issue here is Pitino's contract. It runs through 2026 and U of L owes him another $40 million unless they can demonstrate he was fired "for cause".

Pitino claims he had no knowledge about Adidas' payments to a Louisville recruit. We all know he's lying but is there EVIDENCE that Pitino knew? If there is no evidence then the "for cause" firing is baseless and U of L owes Pitino $40 million.

In a way I hope the school has to pay him. In this NCAA area it's the only punishment they will get for hiring such a slime ball in the first place. You can't tell me that U of L was not a win at all cost type of school.

The school’s insurance would probably cover the payout. And I think this will never go to trial. Neither Pitino or UL want to see the inside of a courtroom, unless UL has a slam dunk case to show cause (which they might depending on what may come out).

Pitino has no interest in going to court over this. This is a play to settle.

I agree with you that this is a money play. Forgive me for being dense, but I am having trouble connecting the dots. If slick Rick wants his UL salary, why does suing Adidus get him that money? Is this a preliminary step before suing UL? Give me your best guess at the play here.

He's setting it up to blame everything on adidas through the courts so louisville has no reason to strip him of his money due in his contract. So they can still fire him, but they owe him is 44M or whatever it is. If indeed he's dirty, then louisville has cause.

To establish that there was “no cause” to fire him. Even if he didn’t know, he should have, and he hired assistants that broke all kinds of rules. That’s cause In my book.

Yep, the linked article explains it more fully. And you are correct, it's $44 million in play here.

I don't like Rick any more than the next guy, but isn't it logical that we hope he wins this case?

I want Louisville to pay dearly for years of cheating. I don't think the NCAA will punish them enough. They should be on the hook for Pitino's salary - they did keep him around after those other scandals after all.

if it would actually damage the bball program then yes I'd be with you. But 44M does nothing other than piss some high $ people off. That's one year of revenue for their bball program.

This case has gotten considerably more complex. The headlines in today's Louisville C-J were about former AD Jurich moreso than Pitino. He too is fighting his dismissal which at this time is based upon "insubordination" for his refusal to fire Pitino (about 15 minutes before the acting president actually fired Pitino).

Now here's a thorny question for you legal beagles: Can Jurich be fired for "cause" when he refused to fire Pitino, who in turn was fired for "cause" that has yet to be proven by evidence? Jurich won't get his job back but his contract with U of L is a couple of million/yr for several years.

The plot thickens. Jurich's 26-yr-old airhead daughter, who attended U of L on a field hockey scholarship, is employed by Adidas at some well-paying junior executive job. They hired her right out of college.

Thanks for helping understand Pitino's play. Given the situation, he has some balls to turn around and sue, however, I guess I would make that play too for $44 million. It will probably be the last money he sees from college basketball.

I think this is going to swing on what he was fired for. The reasons given him at the time of firing. If he was fired for some sort of alleged illegal collusion with Adidas, then UL will need to prove it. They will need to "smoking gun" to get out from under this cloud, and I will bet slick Rick did not leave anything in writing about what he did. If he wins the Adidas case, then he will probably get his back salary. They should have fired him for the sex scandal years back.

On the other hand, If he was fired for not controlling his program, then I think he has no ground to stand on. Whether he knew about the hookers, and whether he knew about the shoe money is not material. His basketball program had no institutional control, and he disserved to be fired. Just my 2 cents, but I am no legal expert.

If an organization is found to be operating outside the rules and the leader of that organization is repeatedly involved in scandal, isn't that just cause for termination?
