Painter called out a player or multiple players for lack of hustle, boxing out, diving for loose balls. He actually went out of his way to do so, straying a bit from the question asked. I think one was pretty obviously Isaac. Were there others? I think Jones would have been either Biggie's or Vince's responsibility to box out, but Biggie appears to be in Painter's good graces. Curious what others read into the comments.

Not sure how I feel about that. I mean on one hand it shows that he was pissed about it and he should be, but to lament about it may not do any good.

If it lights a fire under them against vandy, then I guess sometimes the ends justify the means.

Also he did get on Biggie too:
#Purdue coach Matt Painter said Caleb Swanigan has to be more 'detail-oriented' to limit turnovers. 'With talent comes responsibility

Just reading a few of the twitter notes, seemed like Painter got on the entire team.

*shrugs*...who knows. Hard to judge tone from a text. ..

No names though right? I'm OK with it if it's done without singling out specific people. I suspect the message has been delivered. I bet we see a much more aggressive team tomorrow night.

Interesting comment considering he left Haas out there to drown in his own vomit when he was clearly having an off night. There was a lot of incredibly sloppy play, but I've been ranting about the TO's all season. It's not like this is the first game where we had a lot of TO's. I thought our guys looked intimidated on offense to start the game. But if you look at the numbers we out shot them, out rebounded them, shot great from the line, and had a lot of blocked shots. We just gave the ball away every 3rd possession. That's a killer. IMO that's on CMP. We are 12 games in. Make the guys carry a ball around all day. Fix it coach.

Looking at the twitter notes, some of his responses were when asked specifically about players. He didn't use names but gbi did.

Even with that now that read them, it didn't seem that bad. Like when gbi asked about ajh replacing Haas as the starter .. Painter said he (haas) had reverted to wwe smackdown... pretty accurate assesment... but take it how you will.

Personally I think it's on all of them. You are right this has been going on for a bit and both the coaches and the players need to fix it. That sole stat is why we lost.

No specific names, but he threw enough details for us to have a pretty good idea. Like saying "Juniors and Seniors... and Sophomores who have started for us ever since they got here". Or "I don't care what what they got last year.. what award they got".

I listened to it. Painter's emphasis is that he has a deep bench. He has guys on the bench dying to play more minutes. Painter stated he was suprized by the lack of toughness and hustle by veteran players who are physically tough but didn't show it. He also said Haas was playing WWF.

Message I got from conference is if players show that kind of lack of hustle and toughness going forward. They will be seated on the bench and someone else will play. It was also hinted that Hammons could be starting sooner than later.

My money is on Hammons starting tomorrow night.

His tone was not angry. Painter was more matter of fact: If players are not out there playing hard going after loose balls etc... He has a bench full of players dying to play more minutes.

This is a no brainer and Painter should have instead of talking about it after the game, benched those lazy kids immediately. What good is it after the loss? We should have seen that "Bench full of players" on the court at the time. This is dumb.

This team needs to play with the mentality it did during conf play last season.

It seems like they thrive in the "underdog" role. I want to see them disregard rankings, and play like they want to go out and make the opponent's life a living hell for 40 minutes.

I don't want to overreact too much to one loss, to a good team; I think this team will grow and find a way to become the best sum of its parts.

I would bet hammons is starting as well. I would also bet that Stephens gets the start. At least if I were the coach, he would get the start. Edwards played really sped up and got killed on the boards. Stephens played defense like he gave a damn and took smart shots pretty much all game long unlike Edwards.

I think the lack of hustle and loss should embarrass them and light a fire. I'm sure now they'll bust ass vs Vandy. If not we will lose

Painter always, always says this after a loss. It's we weren't focused or they wanted it more or something like that. It drives me crazy. It's always the same; why should this loss and the post-game comments be any different.

Even after the terrible season two years ago, Painter had a long interview with Lafayette J & C. The headline read something like "Painter puts blame on himself" or something of that idea. And in the first paragraph he starts out "It's my fault..." Then Painter quickly progressed to I have to "recruit better players... players more focused and committed to playing harder.... players committed to working in the off season." (These quote marks are to emphasize Painter is the one talking, they aren't quotes from the article; but these points were basically what he said.)

The headline says he accepts blame and he starts out it's my fault, and then he spends the next three paragraphs blaming the players.

Of course he can't say that their defensive scheme was better than our offensive game plan. He can't say I did a bad job of teaching in practice this week and preparing our players for how a physical, intelligent team like Butler would defend us. He doesn't mention that Butler made sure that Stephens and Cline never got good looks from 3, and I had no way to counteract that.

No, we weren't focused or didn't want it as much as Butler; it's the players fault. If you don't believe me, please pay attention to his comments after our next loss. It will be basically the same thing... just wait and see.

It seems pretty obvious to me that it's on the coach to make sure his team is focused. So I don't really see your point vile. Really just sounds like a bunch of pointless whining.

I'm trying to understand how when a guard loses the ball with no one around him, it's the coach's fault. And if a post player has been working for a solid year not to bring the ball down so that it doesn't get swiped, and he does it multiple times anyway, then it's the coach's fault.

I'm not the first to say this -- cut the turnovers down to a respectable number and this board is very happy this week. Overall, their defense was not better than our offense. We killed ourselves with bad turnovers.
