Painter on ESPN Podcast

Good stuff from Painter on spacing AJ, Caleb, and Vince. Playing Ray, Dakota, and Kendall. And then talking about the point.

Also a rehash of the Caleb commitment and Painter's thoughts on the 30 second shot clock and throwing out the 5 second rule.

Loved his response to the questions. Great answers and thoughts. Painter does play anything up. Straight shooter. Asked if Hill is the guy and he answers honestly.

Thanks for the link.

Listening to him taIk about the guards, I wonder if he's going to end up redshirting one of Cline or Weatherford. I would like to see what Cline can do but I know that PT is going to be very competitive at the 2.

I agree. I want to see him, but don't want to waste a year for 5 minutes a game. It's very similar to the Ryne Smith situation but it sounds like Cline is better all around.

If Cline truly is the best 3-pt shooter on the team, and if the coaches feel he can learn to play defense fast enough the way Dakota did last year, then I don't think Cline will redshirt the only year AJ and Biggie play together. Stephens shot a good percentage last year (38.4%), but the reality was there were some games when he hit little or nothing and others when he hit almost everything. In his off games, we often struggled. I hope Kendall is more consistent this year, but if it turns out Ryan is significantly more consistent at hitting 3's when we need them, then Ryan is going to get minutes.

A lot of great shooters struggle as freshmen. I'd like to see Cline redshirt and work on improving his strength and all around readiness.

Its very likely that Cline redshirts. Break the minutes down and unless Ray is playing under 20 min a game or Dakota and Kendall are playing under 15 min a game, there isn't room for Cline to get more than 10 min a game. That is not enough to justify him playing a whole season IMO. Kid deserves 20 min a game, but he won't get that this year.

It's not that Cline isn't good, it's just Ray, Dakota, and Stephens are better all around players while 2 of them are as good or better at shooting than him.

Stephens and Mathias were both injured last year. They aren't this year. They look great. Vince and Ray will also be shooting the ball a lot better this year. I'm all for Cline redshirting. It will allow him to gain some strength, get some season practice experience in, and get some separation in years from Kendall and Dakota so we have a great shooter for longer. 2016-2017 might be one of the best 3 shooting teams Purdue has had.

2 of them are as good or better at shooting than him.

If that's true, then I agree it makes sense to redshirt.

My premise was... If Cline proves to be significantly better at hitting 3's when we need them, he won't redshirt. You state above that Stephens and Mathias are as good or better at shooting, like it's an absolute fact. I disagree with that; we haven't seen enough to draw that conclusion. Cline could be the most clutch of the three at shooting timely 3's, and that's what could get him onto the floor in front of Stephens and Mathias, as long as he can keep up in the other ways he needs to. There will be close games to win, and Cline might turn out to be a weapon we need in our arsenal. We'll see in a couple months; can't wait! Boiler Up!

I agree that no one should just assume the issue is gone despite improved health for Kendall Stephens and Dakota Mathias. But, will CMP really be able to determine if Ryan Cline is the key before the reg. season starts? You need game results to see....so it's sort of a "Catch 22."

I wouldn't be totally shocked if CMP redshirts him. If things go poorly, or God forbid, more injuries strike.....he'd have the flexibility to "burn it" if needed. It's not quite the same as Ryne Smith, but there are some similarities, and I also remember like some of my fellow posters CMP publicly stating on more than one occasion.....he thinks he made a mistake on that call.

It's a tough decision.....close call. In the end, CMP will do what he thinks is best for the team and for Ryan Cline.

I also agree that when he does become a regular in the line-up, the Boilers will have one of their better long-range shooting teams in a while.
