Outside the Lines on IU Athletics

I don't know how we compare to Indiana as far as medical treatment for athletes but I'd be shocked if you couldn't find a story or two from Purdue, or really probably any major athletic department, from people who were diagnosed incorrectly. That isn't limited to athletes either. Perhaps it has been worse at Indiana. I don't know. I just see this as a case where we all live in that glass house so I wouldn't want to be the one throwing stones. I don't think it would be hard to write a similar article on other major college athletic departments if someone wanted to do the digging.

I know the Irsay money will be for the wellness clinic which is part of this "Excellence Academy" plan, but what should we expect after Glass reaches his vision, degrees in 18-24 months for athletes?

I would hope someone from Purdue (Mitch) would reach out to Irsay and ask if he has any interest in getting his name on a building at Purdue also. Doesn't have to be athletics related but I'd bet he would be receptive. Maybe a contribution to the new high school in Indy that Purdue is starting?

Unfortunately he doesn't have a kid who is a Purdue alum like he does from IU (my understanding is she is the next Colts owner when he is done).

There are many other reasons why a donation to Purdue at some point would look good for him. If I were a man of his wealth doing business in Indy I would not want to slight any of the major in-state institutions.

Maybe like the Star he thinks he will garner stronger statewide support by NOT donating to PU? You know, make the horde of in-state IU fans more happy vs. mildly disappointing the much lower volume of PU alums/fans in state? I don't believe that, just tossing it out there.

As a Purdue fan, I'm not offended he donated to Indiana. I doubt many IU fans would care if he donated to Purdue and especially if that donation were for something other than athletics.

For all I know he may have made some contribution(s) in the past. I'd imagine he donates quite a bit to a variety of things.

Being diagnosed incorrectly is one thing but refusing to offer diagnostic options when a injury is persisting if not getting worse is another......... IMO

TC43, you are a Coltsy Dolt. Any normal Purdue fan would be greatly offended by Irsay's donations to IU but you simply do not get it. You are being played. Obviously you lack the intellect to understand that you are being played, but nonetheless you are being played.

Nah you're just the same butthurt fan that's been crying about Irsay for years. Nobody cares about your little whine fest so you make up a cute little nickname and sling it around with accusations that others don't understand when in reality nobody cares.

It's an example of the change in the college athletics landscape over the past 25-30 years that one of the most important tasks of a school's AD is fund raising. It's always been important, but now your facilities must constantly be upgrading and that requires vast quantities of cash. I find it difficult to believe Purdue doesn't have a number of well-heeled engineering grads able to contribute significant sums to the cause.

As for Irsay, I don't think it extends any further than his daughter is a Varsity Club board member and went to bat for her school. I honestly don't know who Purdue's counterpart to the Irsay family might be, but Daniels and Bobinski surely do and should be working every day for the same kind of donation. It's not the sexy side of the AD job, but it builds the foundation of a solid athletics program. Things like the Excellence Academy and Wellness Clinic don't usually sell a kid on a program, but it's pure gold to parents and family who may have struggled to provide opportunities for the kid up to that point.

At Purdue it is probably going to be very limited in the amount of single individuals to donate vast sums of money. The AD needs to see it is a divide and conquer approach that all backers need to contribute. Not sure of the size of the JPC, but I would imagine it could be tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. That could maintain Purdue's standing with facilities equal to our peers or slightly above...instead of waiting every 10-20 years.

never been a fan of the Irsay's. Only NFL owners that the team is their largest asset.
Will admit that Jim is way better than his dad was.
The drug arrest pretty much destroyed his credibility/
