Purdue can and does make good decisions...just not when they blow leads and get beat...like this game. They have to fight human nature and NOT WANT to take the easy way out...3 ball shots. Embrace the opportunity to be a machine and be effective...EVERY time down the court. They had enough depth that they were going to foul all Haas if he got it deep..and they were not quick enough to prevent it those few possessions they had to foul...and Purdue loved the perimeter shot...which many times is good for them...but not today...Any number of bad decisions on plays in that game could have been the difference:
Mathias behind the back pass, pretty much any crucial moment where Vincent has the ball, Carsen not attacking the rim at the end of regulation, half of Carsen's shots, Haas trying to one-hand dunk (has he ever made one?)...just bad decisions.
Well, when you consider that it is largely the same guys making the decisions that have been making them for four years, I am not sure why it comes as a huge surprise...it is disappointing certainly, but, not surprising.Still...again this year.
Dakota made a bad choice in his behind the back pass that was there for a split second. However, it was the soph that I thought made most of the poor choices. Several players did slip on the court...not that it had anything to do with anything other than I wonder about some footingWell, when you consider that it is largely the same guys making the decisions that have been making them for four years, I am not sure why it comes as a huge surprise...it is disappointing certainly, but, not surprising.
For me...since I lean to finesse over power on the offensive side...and like a read offense which by definition demands finesse to read and react...I ALWAYS want a smart offensive team...ALWAYS. However, I need that choir boy that doesn't get flustered on offense to be a major prick on D adn to be aggressive on that end of the court and so I want the mind to flip as we go over that 10 a second line. What we need from Carsen is not aggression by itself but reasoned aggression. Purdue never got hurt, but he should NEVER have tried his dunk the shot that Dakota followed, but just laid it in and he would have scored "before" the D got there...but it wouldn't have been the highlight.Isn't it the old balance between playing smart and playing aggressive? I feel like in general we have 4 guys who play smart but not very aggressive and one guy who plays aggressive but not always smart.
But let's not let the other 4 off the hook. Because there is no aggressiveness, no "climb on my back" attitude since Biggie left, CE is the only one to step up at times. And then it leads to him trying to do too much. But at least he is willing to lead. That's how I see it anyway. For me...since I lean to finesse over power on the offensive side...and like a read offense which by definition demands finesse to read and react...I ALWAYS want a smart offensive team...ALWAYS. Make no mistake he is better this year, but guys...when the bright lights and stage are there...it is about smart plays adn execution...and Carsen can still improve his decisions. he is very talented...but pull up threes without the clock running down are many times not the best way to end a possession
PJ and Carsen are not going to get manhy boards against good team. Vince has improved his aggressiveness on boards until today a bit. Dakota will get some hustle boards...they all must try. However, if your are going to lead..don't go charging into a bad situation. Carsen is agressive and I'm not surprised that he would make more mental mistakes...just cut them down. If you are not on a hot streak...be ready to drive the ball and get to the line where you are 9 for 9. There were other mental mistakes...but everyone knows he has more and he is soooooooo important for Purdue that you want the ball in his hands...but that also means if you have the ball more...more is expected of your decisions...But let's not let the other 4 off the hook. Carsen does try to do too much and they say it is confidence...well, okay...tone that confidence down with a sense of reality...just a bit...
