OT - Women's Volleyball, NCAA 3rd Round

Caught the last set against BYU at lunch. Didn't see first 4 sets but Purdue won the 1st set, lost the next 2, won the 4th set with a really strong start, forcing the 5th. They really battled to the finish and it didn't disappoint. Good and fun times with Purdue sports right now. Can't get enough of it.

Saved a bunch of match points, down 14-10 in the 5th set! That is more than hair-raising in rally scoring. Kudos and a supremely well done to the Lady Boilers.

Purdue (6) faces winner of Pittsburgh (3)/Kansas for the Regional Final and right to advance to the WVB Final Four.

i watched most of the match. It was an excellent contest, and equally frustrating! I thought Purdue was going to blow it when they fell behind 2-1 (sets) largely due to service and hitting errors in sets 2 and 3. But they righted the ship and dominated set 4 just like they did in set 1. Then reverted back to shaky play early in set 5 and were behind the WHOLE set, trying to play catch up.

Down 14-10 (4 match points) Purdue battled back to tie it! I was stunned and cheering at my home office desk. lol
Then they fought off another match point at 14-15! After that Purdue took the lead and had the momentum. BYU was stunned they had 5 match points and couldn't close.

I never used to watch this sport, but the last few years I have become a big fan. Coach Shondell and Purdue's rise have made me a true believer. Olympics helped also. You can teach an old dog new tricks or an old trick and new dogs. Something like that, I think?

Coach Shondell is always rah-rahing our other sport teams on twitter. I like his passion for Purdue.

BYU had only 1 loss on the season, but if you watched the match- you could see Purdue was the better side. Purdue hit the ball MUCH harder (numerous spikes straight into the floor, hard off BYU bodies, etc), we were blocking nearly everything, etc.

To BYU credit, they played very clean... good service and very few errors. They didn't beat themselves. Purdue on the other hand had TEN service errors, numerous hits out of bounds etc, etc. Those free points mainly came in sets 2 and 3. When Purdue plays clean, they are one of the top teams in the country.

I was the same as you. But I now have a 16yr old daughter in HS that plays vball... so I obviously watch it alot more now and have really become a fan too.

The poise and composure from these ladies is amazing! They came back from 2 sets down to win in the round of 32 against Dayton as well. I know a lot of us have been conditioned to have a defeatist attitude as Purdue fans. There’s no way I would have had the composure they did to stare down 4 straight match points (5 overall) and fight out a win. They’re a really impressive team and well coached.

Our coach has made all the difference in changing our program around in volleyball.
It is not specific to volleyball...very accurate with respect to volleyball, but, it is not specific to volleyball...Purdue collectively has a pretty great core of coaches right now...especially with a particular someone having left a particular program where they use a round orange ball and play games in Mackey Arena.

Perfect with respect to the Purdue mindset...

I won't lie...they went down 5 in that last set, and, I was certain that they would not be able to get a win.

Even losing the 2nd and 3rd set...winning the 4th seemed like a Purdue type of thing just to get to a 5th set and make a loss to follow even more painful (and thankfully that did not happen).

You are spot on with respect to the composure and poise...and resiliency...and, I think it emanates from the guy (or guy(s)/gal(s)) on the sidelines...as they display the same.

Outstanding win for them...here is hoping they become the first team to play in a FF this year...a preview for the Men's basketball program.

I watched the entire match, I concur that Purdue was the better team, however, it was close. Purdue had the harder hitters, BYU seemed to be more consistent, perhaps boring is the correct word. Great win!
