Each year during College Go! week at my little rural school, the staff is asked a question about the college we attended. This year's question:

The top 3 things I liked most about my college were......

I got to thinking about friendships that have survived these many years, about euchre games in the dorm, about football games (we were good in the first 2-3 years I attended), even about receiving a world-respected college education (which I never really appreciated at the time). But to list the top 3? How about it, Boiler Grads? (I was pretty much a non-drinker then, too, so all memories of Harry's or the Stabilizer do not apply to me!)

1) Academic reputation. Many times people don't know that Purdue is in the B10, or that it's in Indiana, or that it's a public school. But most people do recognize that it's a good school.

2) I enjoyed going to a big school. So many options for things to do, diverse people to hang out with, so many different clubs to get involved in.

3) I truly think Purdue is most unique because there aren't many fans besides alums compared to other big schools. I don't know how many conversations have been struck up because I'm wearing Purdue gear around the world. That's not the case with IU, ND, UM, OSU, etc.

Well geez, 1. I really, really liked three different girls in my freshman classes. I came from a small rural HS and wow, these girls ... they opened-up a whole new world to me.
2. The psych classes were enlightening. I had the guy who was nationally respected for consumer psych (Jacoby?) and I saw the world in a whole new light based on him, on abnormal psych, and based on developmental psych. It may not be unique to Purdue, but it was a totally new look on people/life.
3A. Rick Mount, Herm Gilliam, Billie Keller, George Faerber, Larry Weatherford, UCLA, Lew Alcindor, Ranked #1 in Football when the season opened, Mike Phipps, Keyes finished as runner-up for the Heisman Trophy to USC's O.J. Simpson. Phipps would be the runner-up for the award in 1969. Both players were consensus First-team All-Americans
3B. McGuire ripping his plaid sportcoat off in Madison, WI ..... Going to the final 4 in Louisville. Purdue set a school record for points in a single game by stomping Indiana 120-76 in Mackey Arena. Once at the Final Four, Purdue beat North Carolina 92-65 to set up a rematch with John Wooden's Bruins. Unfortunately, Alcindor and John Vallely were too much to handle. Vallely had 29 points and Alcindor added 37 in his final collegiate game as UCLA cruised to a 92-72 win.

Retrospectively, I have far more respect for my education than I probably had at graduation. Loved the big school life.
I totally agree with your 3A and would add beating USC in 66-67 Rosebowl and my roommate playing in the Hula Bowl in 69-70 and bringing back a lot of fresh pineapples. Also appreciated his mother introducing me to homemade pierogies.

Those were really good years to be a boiler. Lots more to say, but why? They were just really good years ... I've had a great life ... much of which was due to Purdue ... rock on ...
