OT: Mizzou Coaching Search

It's a circus. I wonder if the Cal-Berkeley hoops fans are happy with the results of Cuonzo's teams after nearly 3 seasons. I know Tennessee fans didn't like him (partly because he's not an outgoing personality like Bruce Pearl, partly because of their style of play, i.e. Martin focusing mostly on defensive improvement but rarely on offensive improvement, and simply the win-loss results).

I wasn't aware he was considered a candidate for Illinois if Groce got canned.

I've read a couple of articles that mentioned him. But everyone gets mentioned for every job now. Groce has a great class coming next year and I think if the Illini can win one or two in the tourney, he's safe. For a year. Just like Two Tone Tommy.

Vol fans had absolutely no problem with Pearl's team members getting pulled over at 4 in the morning smoking pot and being caught with guns with serial numbers filed off in the car, or illegally throwing parties at his house off campus for recruits who took pics and turned him in...He then got caught lieing about it...They simply loved how he would paint his chest Orange and run through the Arena highfiving fans. That's the mindset of most Vol fans down here.....Pretty much a poor man's IU...

That Rutgers loss really stings for Illinois (who some had started talking about potential for NCAAs).

But let's be careful about "winning one or two" in the tourney - 2 would mean they beat Purdue! ha

Rundown on candidates for open Mizzou job, Zo and Clappy are mentioned right off the top. Love the characterization of the IU job having unrealistic expectations.

Sampson mentioned as a long-shot candidate.

Zo needs to buckle down somewhere. While I guess his history is not terribly out of the ordinary, seems like he bounces around a lot (especially if he left to go somewhere this year).

This scenario sounds familiar.. Isn't Crean supposed to interview for the Mizzou job and leverage it for a new contract and more money for his assistants at IU?

The difference is Purdue fans actually wanted him to stay....

Wonder if the athletic department would chastise their fans though!

Crean/Mizzou makes a lot of sense. He should go for it. Makes sense for Kelvin as well. The SEC is easy pickings.

I used to live in Knoxville and am friends with a ton of UT alums and alums from other SEC schools. Sometimes Purdue fans (and fans of other B1G schools) have this self-righteous attitude when it comes to any SEC fanbase. These stereotypes of SEC fans willing to overlook any crime in the name of winning is just flat wrong. Most of my UT friends agreed that Pearl should be let go and blamed it directly on him. Martin was never really embraced because the program took a step back under him. Some people from afar blamed the fact that he was never embraced on racism, others blamed it on a redneck fan base mentality (like Boilergal), but the bottom line is that the program generally regressed under Martin.

Recruiting was falling way off with Martin. The program has not made the tournament since Martin left and his last recruiting class are now seniors. Some of that is the fault of the coaches that have been hired since then but some of it is the fact that they did not inherit much talent in the program.

Who does Bernie (is that the name of the P-D columnist who was tweeting about Painter?) say is a lock to get the job? That's the first person we can cross off the list.

Revisionist history...Have lived less than 2 hours from the Arena for more than 30 years so don't talk to me about red-neck stereotypes. More than 3/4 of the fans( many of whom live around me daily by the way)still post on the Vol Basketball forum about trying to get Pearl back from the Tigers- I know as I have kept my membership since Zo first got there.....Like IU, the Vol fans believed they deserved a big-named coaching Messiah. They were calling for Zo's head as being unworthy before he took his first step on Campus....Zo's teams there loved him- and even the players who came back who were gone before he got there made statements to the press after visiting his practices like "Wish Coach Zo had been there when we were playing". I know because I followed it all daily when Zo was there. As for the Vols who haven't had much recruiting talent since he left- you conveniently left out the part about the Recruits who were allowed to decommitt and go elsewhere with Zo's dismissal.....I have followed Cuonzo Martin as one of my all-time favorite Boilermakers since he began playing at Purdue so you can bet I continued to follow him when he was this close to my home.
I was a Southern Baby who went north while in school because my Daddy loved coaching basketball and this is pretty much football country down here. He loved Purdue Basketball and I grew up going to games as a kid with him...It's why I went to Purdue and why I bleed Old Gold and Black....I traveled the world to 41 countries as a Naval Officer...But when it came time to retire I elected to come home to the southern Appalachians that I love..... so don't play that " redneck stereotype" card with me Cervol.....You picked the wrong Southern Momma!!!! Nuff said...

Yes, Bernie Miklasz says hello. However, the CMP story was not one of Bernie's bests....

For someone that loves east Tennessee so much, I find it interesting that you are doubling down on the broad-brush, negative stereotype regarding UT fans and the Cuonzo situation. I happen to have a different view than you on this situation. I also find it interesting that you live 2 hours away from Knoxville, which makes you an authoritative expert on this situation, but are totally willing to discredit my perspective on this issue, even though I actually lived in the city of Knoxville, and have attended numerous UT basketball games when Cuonzo was coaching (wearing Purdue gear of course to support the coach). Just a reminder that Bloomington is about 2 hours away from West Lafayette, which proves you can get a totally different experience and be exposed to vastly different perspectives within a 2 hour radius. Just because we were exposed to different perspectives on this issue, doesn't mean your perspective is completely right and mine is completely wrong.

What I am discrediting is your accusing me of "red neck stereotyping". What part of my post did you disagree with? That Vol fans were complaining about Zo before he got there? That his players loved him? That players who graduated before he got there gave interviews about how they wish he had been coach when they were there? That Zo's best recruits all decommitted when he was fired?? Oh or maybe they still want Pearl back?? Perhaps about Pearl's players getting pulled over and when the cops smelled pot they searched the car to find the illegal guns? None of those things are opinions...those are all documented facts. Perhaps you call that entertaining a different perspective but I call it ignoring the facts. I simply took issue with you making broad statements of opinion regarding Martin's performance then when called on it with a list of facts, chose to try to discredit the post by crying "stereo typing". Did most of the fans want Zo gone- absolutely. Those same fans didn't want him there in the first place. But as someone else posted, Zo improved Tennessee's record from Pearl's final days every single year... So tell me the fans of whom you speak were making rational decisions based on fact??? Zo just had too much dignity to paint his chest orange and make a fool of himself. He was too busy coaching his players and teaching young players how to become men instead of hoodlums...oh and refused to cheat.

Did you even read my post? I never said half that stuff you claim. I never said anything about the players not loving Zo or claiming Bruce Pearl didn't cheat. Of course the players loved Zo - who wouldn't. Of course Pearl cheated - he is dirty. I'm not a Pearl supporter and I always want Zo to do well, wherever he is at. I'm a Purdue fan not a UT fan - I don't really care how they handle their program. My point is that there is a perception that most UT fans hated Zo from the very beginning and were not willing to give him a chance. From my experience actually living in Knoxville, having many UT alum friends, attending games at UT during the Zo era, speaking to long-time basketball ticket holders at games, etc., most UT fans initially thought that Zo was a fairly good hire and were rooting for him to succeed. Of course there were some unreasonable idiots that were against anyone not named Bruce Pearl - these are the type of people you referenced on the internet forum you observe. But from my real life experience actually talking to many people about this face to face, those folks were not in the majority. And based on that experience, I always disagree with the perception that most UT fans were against Zo from the beginning. Now by the end of his tenure, I would say about 30-percent of the fan base wanted him gone - those folks just happened to be very vocal about it. Kind of like the folks on this board who want CMP fired after every loss. Now my exposure to the UT fan base consisted mostly of alums. UT is kind of like IU where they have a huge following of in-state folks who didn't actually attend UT - maybe some of those folks actually did hate Zo from the beginning. But the folks I knew were mostly all pulling for Zo and the program to succeed.

You also referenced Zo's "best recruits all leaving when he was fired". First, he was not fired. He left for the Cal job on his own. Secondly. the "best recruits" you are referring to consisted of a four man class of Larry Austin, CJ Turman, Jordan Cornish, and Phil Cofer. That class has been a huge bust. I think the best of that bunch averages about 3 ppg and most of them have transferred at least once. You and another poster referenced that Zo's record improved every year, which is true. Many UT fans that wanted Zo to stay actually used that argument as the main justification for him to be retained. The UT fans that wanted Zo to leave by the end of his tenure typically referenced the fall off in recruiting and the overall drop in ability to compete for a top spot in the SEC.

Apologies to everyone for the long post - just thought some people may be interested to hear the take of a Purdue fan living in Knoxville during the Zo era - especially since there are so many different perceptions of how that all went down.
