Young people (25 and under) probably need to chime in on this one but If I'm reading Josh's tweets correctly, it doesn't appear as if he called anyone in particular the N word - ending in r. The way I read his tweets he used the generic N word - ending in a - in a plural sense as others might use the word bitches. Am I misreading what he wrote?
Are there any minorities on this board who were offended by his tweets? Or is this a case where a bunch of white people are telling people they "should" be offended?

Doesn't matter if you're referring to a specific person or not, no need to be using that word EVER. The only instance where I'd give a little slack is where song lyrics are being quoted or something along those lines.

Do I agree with reporters digging up tweets from early teenage years? No - there's too much maturity and growth that could have happened between now and then that would make these tweets irrelevant to current character.

That being said, there's too much bad history in this country for people to be using that word (singular, plural, or "generic"). It's never going to go away (people are stupid), but it should be discouraged in every instance.

*EDIT* Don't @ me, not looking to get into a political argument. Won't respond if you do - gotta keep this board on-topic*

Young and idiotic but probably shows a bit of the underbelly that he has been taught to hide in plain sight. It doesn't matter who you are...if you aren't black, don't use the word as it's connotation outside of the black community is always negative and derogatory.

If you don't mind me asking - what is your age? I think young people (25 and under) disagree with you. I see young whites and blacks using forms of this word on social media all of the time. I think the younger generation (black and white) doesn't see the word with racial overtones but rather as a simple derogatory word similar to that of "bitch".

Older folks were definitely taught this way of thinking. As I said above, I don't think millennials see the word the same.

I'm 24, and "simple derogatory term" would only apply if it's between black people. No point in using that specific word, which has strong racial connotations whether or not you intend it to, when there are so many other "simple" derogatory words that you use.

34. There may be a disassociation with the word by younger generations, which I agree with. It doesn't make the root of the words meaning less hateful and divisive.

Only if we allow it to be hateful and divisive.

It feels like a waste of time to try and keep using a word in hopes that it no longer comes across as hateful and divisive. By nature of continuing to use a word that has hateful and divisive roots, we compromise any credibility that we may have when we later try to say that we intended to use it as a "simple" derogatory word.

We all better not actually type the word either, for fear one of them will come get us. It's just a word, one which is used CONSTANTLY by the very people who cry it as racist. If "******," or the retardation of the word, "nigga," is so bad, why does ANYONE use it?

I don't think young people use it in hopes that it no longer comes across as racist. I think they use it because to them it is no longer a racist term - it's just another in a long line of derogatory words people use. In essence they have devalued its meaning. Which I believe is a great thing.

I agree that our ultimate goal should be that racism is no longer understood or an issue (as long as it's properly hashed out and dealt with). I also agree that it's great if there are truly young people that could use it (and those who hear/receive it) without it being associated with race. Ultimately, I think we just disagree slightly on how realistic that is.

Appreciate the brief, civil discussion we were able to have - going to move on from this thread in order to avoid participating in a yet another derailed free-board conversation. Cheers!

Not to be 'that guy' because I'll inevitably be labeled a 'snowflake' by some, but did you really just say you 'fear one of them will come get us?' So you are now making this an 'us vs. them' in this instance? Seems rather divisive to me for someone who seems to believe the word we are referencing isn't divisive and is 'just a word.'

It was sarcasm since everyone here was saying "Nword" as if that is any different than the actual word.

Here is my take. If you are going to get on somebody for using that word, then you should get on every player that has tweeted or used that word. If it is unacceptable, then so be it. Putting a double standard on a word is ridiculous. I have seen many twitter pages that have many things that I would consider red flags, including language. If this is a trend, so be it. Young folks should be careful about what they wrote and purge it all when they make it. But if they are only going to target white kids that isn't right. Let's be clear, I am not defending Allen, but I would like to see fairness. Nobody should be targeted simply for their skin color, religion, or sexual preference.

Allen has also stated the word was in a quote to a Rick Ross song (didn't a Villanova player just go through a very similar thing?) from 2012-2013. If you don't know who Rick Ross is, look him up. Go listen to some of his music. Wouldn't be hard to come up with 20 quotes that would be objectionable for Allen to post. I don't think it should have any affect whatsoever. This shouldn't even be news.

If somebody is looking to be offended, it doesn't take much.

this is so incredibly stupid....Why does the media (actually, I know why) feel it's their job to try to unearth some obscure tweets or social media posts that someone make from years and years ago. I get the fact that more offensive and racially divisive things they can find, the better for their click bait.

I'm just really glad there wasn't social media or a permanent electronic record of everything I said as a teen.

Anyone think his tweets had an impact on his draft status last night?

He was like the seventh player drafted and will get slotted into a multimillion dollar contract? I think he'll be fine...

Maybe he lost a few hundred thousand dollars at the outset, but hopefully he learns from this. I think if he continued to use this sort of language (and I'm not saying he has), it would potentially create a trust issue in the locker room.

Hard to know for sure without being in the room with the GM's but on the surface I would say no. From everything I read, Allen looked to be the 3rd best QB in the draft behind Darnold and Rosen. When the Browns took what was widely considered the 4th best QB in the draft at #1, that slotted the other 3 QB's down. The Giants were never going to draft a QB. The Jets probably never thought Darnold would be available at #3 and probably peed themselves when the Browns took Mayfield. They quickly snatched up Darnold. The Browns then reached again when selecting Ward. The Broncos aren't desparate for a QB and when Chubb fell to them he was too good to pass up. The Bills tried to trade up to the Colts at 6 to get Allen but the Colts wanted too much in return. The Bills knowing the Colts weren't going to draft a QB then turned to Tampa Bay to make their deal and get their guy.
The real head scratcher was Rosen falling all the way to #10. I think he'll end up being the best of all of these guys.

I like Rosen too but he had 2 concussions last year and looks on the frail side. My fave QB is Mason Rudolph.

good point. I like Jackson if he can be kept off the field for 3-4 years and allowed to grow and get under center. If the Ravens do what the Packers did with Favre/Rodgers, I think he has a high chance of success.

I think Rosen's history of controversy/character concerns contributed to his fall to pick #10. As long as he doesn't take too many big hits and keeps his head on straight, he should be a strong NFL starter.

my take is that the younger generation has an entirely different take on all offensive language. they have no problem raising their finger or dropping the F bomb. and also have no problem being offensive or offending others. then again, there are certain people of my generation that act the same way. At one time our FCC censored all offensive language. Now they only do so for certain TV and radio programming. our youth hear offensive language every day on TV, the internet, music, and in their homes and neighborhoods. And they are just repeating the words they hear. .

I have a huge problem with hypocrisy, double standards and role models. rules and laws should apply to all people, not just a segment of it. if you want me to stop saying a word, and if we are al l equal under the law, tha t means everybody needs to stop using the word. and I see one huge role model who doesn't give a dam about what he says, or who he offends. and our teens are following the example he and his followers have established. And some of the worst offenders are lawyers and doctors who are supposedly our most professional. There is more to life than making a profit and seeing the stock market rise.. there is more to life than just being a member of a church. Ethics are no longer a part of our government or many of our religious or charitable organizations.

I find the term snowflake as offensive as any other previous offensive word uttered. Why? Because it's use is now meant to be derogatory and offensive towards others.

And I know somebody will find this post offensive because it's longer than 4 words.

and if the Browns ownership had any intelligence, they would have drafted Barclay with their # 1 pick and they would have had their pick of 2-3 great QBs at #4. and the one they wanted would have definitely still been there. but people keep saying GMs are ten times smarter than fans like me. just because a person has a job, doesn't mean they are competent in it.

Are you on any medication?
yes I am. but I feel very offended people like you would post that question as if just because my viewpoints disagree with yours, I must either be crazy, drunk or on drugs!

this thread started as being a very off topic , politically oriented thread. And you can't discuss a politically oriented topic without including politics and our government and our religions who have decided to make that word and the use of it offensive. At one time the use of that word was actually against the law. And now other words such as bomb and fire are also against the law depending on where they are used. A packers wide receiver was recently arrested for making a joke to his girl friend at an airport. the problem is, when do you take a person literally, and when do you believe the person was sarcastic. the answer is only the person who uttered the words knows if those words included sarcasm. you can't expect the vast majority to realize it.

and yes, calling a person a snoflake is a very demeaning, derogatory and offensive word. it should also be noted Lincoln and the republican party used to be known as very liberal oriented. So when calling somebody a Liberal, it means you're also calling them a Republican?

and the last poster that posted such an offensive post involving my name, I reported him and that entire thread was deleted . and with the majority of my speculations, they are usually very accurate. I knew somebody would use my post as an opportunity to make a personal attack on me, and not my post. and hunkgolden, you just fulfilled my speculation to a T - shirt!

and yes, Cleanface posted a poll about who was the worst poster on the basketball forum and included my name as one of the choices.. and yes, I reported both him and his demeaning poll, and it was deleted. and the other poster named in his poll was so humiliated and offended, she left this forum. and several immature posters cheered.

For the life of me, people, I cannot see what problem some of you have with Woleg. I find even his "War and Peace" (tic!) posts to be balanced, well-informed, and informative. In fact, I welcome them! Can't tell from the limited time I have been following whether or not he is a Purdue alum, but my encouragement is to keep posting. Your insight is appreciated by more than just me, I'm sure. And I am aware that this minor rant is far removed from the original topic; I just believe we are all mature enough to handle posts which with we disagree. Now, as for the term 'Snowflake'.....

Spend a day or two in your local high school that has diversity and the n word with an a on the end is used constantly by many students of different races as both a positive and negative connotation!

I hear it everyday and have in different high schools as a teacher! They are still young, dumb and just showing off most of the time to be cool, hip, in, etc and almost all grow out of it!

Maybe he identifies as black, like that Shaun King dude? Or like Liz Warren identifies as a Native American?

Just because you watch football doesn’t mean you know how to evaluate talent or build a team.

Always, always get your qb first. Considering you adore the packers, I’m surprised you aren’t familiar with Dorsey and his drafting strategy.

I agree, with the caveat being an O-line. Lots of #1 QB picks have had their careers shortened or altered by playing early behind a terrible O-line. Aikman, Archie Manning, David Carr, and Luck are a few I can think of off the top of my head.

Agree to an extent. Luck had the misfortune of going to a team with a god awful GM.
