It appears that everyone is after each others necks on the other threads, so this is my attempt to talk about something else until we do have something to talk about.

Any players on here? I played a lot in my early (before kids) life but slowed way down once I had kids. I have now started playing a lot again. My clubs are about 12 years old and I am thinking about getting a new set. I will be 47 this year so I am thinking about going with wedge - 6 iron and getting a couple of hybrid 4 and 5.

Anyone had any experience doing this? BTW I am a mid handicapper. Any other golf topics are welcome.

Cleveland Golf just came out with some new iron sets, driver , and woods for various playing levels.....you might want to check them out. I would go with graphite shafts for everything unless you're thinking about entering some amateur tournaments.....the extra stress on the joints from steel shafts I don't think is a good trade-off as close as you are approaching the Champions Tour cut-off.

I would also think about a 3-hybrid, 3-wood, Driver combo.....and shop around/ demo other wedges......those have become so customized over the last decade+.

If you really want to do it right (and there are still economical ways of doing this)......and IF you are up-to-date with the MRS (and built up credits on honey-do's), maybe you could try a club/swing analysis or get fitted......some places I have heard throw that in if you buy the new clubs from them. GolfTech is an option.

Another thing you could do is try to talk to one of the PGA club professionals in your area.......most I have found are very willing to give you some thoughts/advice on clubs without necessarily taking a lesson.

Good luck, and enjoy yourself....that's the name of the game.....but, by God....make sure once you've made your purchase that the grips are ok......

I actually played in a charity golf scramble today. Texas pretty much covered everything you need. Definitely make sure to hit all the different brands before you decide on which brand to purchase. Most Dick's Sporting Goods have a hitting bay. If you are in the indy area, Golf Galaxy in Castleton is a great place. Enjoy!

As soon as I sent this, I realized you definitely do not live in the indy area haha. I'm sure there are similar places around you!

Thanks for the advice. I hit hybrid blades now. Looking for something a little more forgiving.

I guess I should have been more spicific. What I am really interested in is anyone has ditched their 5,4 and 3 iron and replace them with the hybrids. I am an 11 handicap so I don't consider myself a beginner but getting rid of the high irons would be a big change.

Yeah, I bounce around between 12 & 14, so nothing great, but not a complete hack either. I exchanged my 3 & 4 irons for hydrids a few years back. At first I loved them - I probably hit them better than anything else. However, I bought a new set of TM irons (5 - pw) and hit them so well I'm thinking of going back.

Mandeville,

I've had a 3-Hybrid (Titleist) for awhile because my iron set didn't have a three. I really like it, but I also really like having my 5 and 4 irons and have carried a 2 or a 1 sometimes. However, that's my personal preference. One of my best friends has had a 4 and 5 and even 7 hybrid.....has had Adams and Calloway.....both good, and he swears by them. I'd also check out TaylorMade. If you play courses with a fair amount of rough (bermuda or otherwise), I could see going the hybrid route.....one draw-back is they are generally more difficult to flight down.....in windier conditions can cost you some distance....but you may not have to worry if you're like the Lamma.

Big Hitter, the Lamma......Long.

With the 4i and 5i, move the ball a bit forward in your stance and swing down through contact like a boss. No need for candy ass hybrids. :D

Got fitted last year. The pro told me to ditch my long irons. I only have up to a 7 iron. Have hybrids to replace the 3-6. Also suggested a 4 wood versus 3 wood as it is easier to hit off of a tight fairway lie. I'm a 9 handicap and 55 years old. Still have steel shafts. Best of luck!!!

Yes I still hit steel shafts and will for a while. I have a very high swing speed and have been working like hell to slow it down. I hit a 7 wood. Because I like it. 200-215 if I swing under control but I am lacking the accuracy I would like. My thought was maybe a hybrid would help

I can see why. For a few years I tried to hit the hybrids but was attacking them like irons. I have up. But now that I have started to trust the club and swinging a less they have started to feel better.

Where do you play? I am over in the Houston area a lot. Maybe we could go play someday. I can tell you this, no one I play with at this time could care less about PU basketball.

Most courses have demo days from Calloway, Taylormade etc, go and hit some different brands and types of clubs, then get fitted . I prefer Ping myself, also like the Calloway Chrome ball. Good you started playing again. Also I have one hybrid, not a fan of more than one, prefer irons over hybrids.

I haven't ditched the 4 or 5 iron yet but I do have a "mixed set" and it seems to be the popular thing to do with low hcpers.

My 4 and 5 irons are more game improvement ish while I'm using CBs in my 6-PW. Then I have a 3 hybrid, 3 wood then Driver at the top of the bag.

I wouldn't go get fitted at a big box place if you were going to do this as shaft length is key in the GI irons to keep your yardage gaps consistent. SOMETIMES the big box places have guys who REALLY do know what they are doing but I would go to a specialized fitter that carries a few brands to get a good depth and breadth of brands to try (if you are looking to change).

My game is in awful shape right now with just having a kid but the 4-5 irons being GI type clubs definitely saved me shots when I was respectable. Now that I play once a month max, I should heed my own advice and ditch the CBS!

Mandeville,

I don't have a regular club/course anymore....and am still recovering...been a while since I played in Houston area but have played the old Redstone courses, Wildcat, Memorial Park and Sugar Creek. Had played most of the courses in the Austin area and some in San Antonio and Dallas.

Most of this year, golf activities have been as a spectator.....I have a friend who got invited to go to the Presidents Cup; should be a really good event.

Regardless, maybe there's a time we can some day meet for a beverage and assess how the Boilers are moving up.

Golf is a funny game. Earlyer this year I got into a grove and was playing well. At some point something changed and my game went to crap. I am starting to think my best bet may be to find a hybrid and put it in the bag. That would be the cheap option. there is nothing wrong with my irons. I am just not comfortable hitting 5 -3 anymore.

I think that will be my next move. See it helps to talk through these things.

If I remember I will let you know when I am in the great state of TX.

Haha. You're talking yourself into something.

Always my kryptonite on the course.

I'd def. go with the 3 and 4 hybrid. My 5 iron is my 185 club and I think I'd feel weird having it be a hybrid.

The 3 hybrid can be a weapon off the tee too on those short par 4s you just need to get it in play.

I'm a TaylorMade metal wood guy but I've been impressed with Titleist hybrids and their performance.

I use Tour Edge Exotic woods and hybrids. I play the new XJ 1 driver and three wood. Took the five wood out and put in a seven wood....and play a 3-4-5 hybrid with Mizuno 7-65 degree wedge. As advertised, they're longer and you can get them with a fade or draw bias. I also give away Pro V's in my business but play Volvik's which for my game are better than the Pro V's. Find a pro shop that carries the Exotics and I'll be surprised if you don't buy them after hitting them. Just my opinion.

That's interesting. I hit Mizuno irons now. R15 driver and Taylor made 3 and 7 woods. I hit a cut or power fade depending on how you judge to two. About 10 yards of fade.

Louisiana is not a big golf state and the pro shops suck for the most part. We have a few options, but the guys that try to fit are a joke. The last few times I have hit a hybrid it has been way better than trying to hit my 4 iron. I used to hit my 4 right at 200. Down here where it feels like you are trying to hit through a waterfall 9 months a year I am not even close to being able to do that. Plus Father Time has changed my swing when I try to jump on a a ball. Typicly lose it right. Fade turns into a slice.

As I said, I think I am going to get fitted with a 4 and 5 hybrid and take the 3,4,5 out of my bag to give me some options. I will definitely look into your suggestions. BTW you can send me all the pro V's you want. Not sure from a ball flight perspective if I like them or not but I seem to put much better with them.

Go to Roger Dunn on Bundy. Great area to demo clubs plus they have a good demo program.

You have a great golf supplier in your state. Try www.Golfballs.com and order a dozen of the Volvik Matte finish. I play the green, orange, white and you can't lose one in the second cut.
