Why is it that football programs from the south (Alabama, Arkansas, Miami, etc) seem to always have an unlimited supply of athletic guards on their basketball roster? Is it the warm weather? Is it the coach? The system?

Guards but not tackles?
IS there an increased relevance of athletic guards to football success????

Talking basketball (the "guard") positions
I thought you were talking football as well. My "guess" is that Indiana in particular and maybe the surrounding states are more inclined to be fundamental players...more skilled. Perhaps the athletes...however many, were not as skilled and never played or continued playing in schools. Indiana's population is not much either compared to some major cities. I used to have a condo on Cocoa Beach and they would have some of the younger AAU national teams play in Cocoa, Merrit Island and Cocoa Beach and there were some athletes there and many were not very cerebral as players. I remember once going to the Y where I was told there would be pickup games and watching some games. Once a game was over a guy came towards me and we talked for a few. I asked him if he knew what a screen was and I got a blank stare. Soon another game started and all five players on both teams just worked individually moving around and wanting the ball. There were some athletes there. I asked some local people that I knew well and they just said players down there are leaner...possibly due to the heat but that was mostly football rated.

Could be as simple as what different areas prioritize. Gene was on record once where he said there was a time you could go down south and find an athlete and get him to come to school, but not any more. Very close to his words...unsure of the "not any more".

An athlete and a coachable athlete who can stay academically eligible at Purdue are at times not the same person
