Oregon fires Helfrich

Yep, looks like we are gonna get whoever is coaching at Central Catholic. Start that pipeline!!

While he is my first choice, Sumlin is not getting fired. What about Helfrich? Hi octane offense.

If we were serious about Sumlin, and money was no issue, we could just spend the money and get him to get out contract and pay him whatever he wants to come here.

Hell we're whining about the Turtleneck's buy out and reporats are that Sumlin's buyout is massive in comparison.

The schools buyout is $15 million if they are to fire him. If he were to leave to go somewhere else it requires him to pay only a $5 million buyout if he terminates the deal without cause before the Aggies' last game of the 2016 season, including any bowl game. The deal is effective Jan. 1, 2014.

I have been disappointed with the delay, afraid Fleck is just the flavor of the year, and excited about Miles with a good OC. But Helfrich might be perfect for us. P5 school. Great offense/passing--needs a good DC. Great resume. Good age. Great career record.

Don't think this really effects us. Have always thought Oregon is going to aim higher than us because of Knight.

I suspect they will first make a run at Chip Kelly. I also think Miles and his all star coaching staff makes a lot of sense here. Sark has West coast roots and Miles has won a National Championship and still recruits at a high level. I never really thought Miles would end up at Purdue because of the high price tag that the assistants he wants to bring would demand. While Purdue maybe ready to step and compete, there is still a limit on what we can and should be spending and think the entire coaching staff would end up being one of the most expensive in college football.

Yep... Purdue dragging their feet
Give me a break. You have no idea what has been going on in regards to this. Besides that, how do you force a coach to accept your offer if that is indeed what is going on?

I very highly doubt Purdue has been dragging anything, but an offer isn't taken by a coach how is that Purdue's fault?

Oregon will only hire a gunslinger for a coach. Miles ain't on their radar IMHO. There first call will probably be to Chip Kelly to see if he's ready to "come back home" from the 49ers. His experiment has failed in the NFL. They will be done with there season January 1st. This isn't any longer than if they wanted to poach a big-time coach from an early January bowl team.

Just to give some help to the sky is falling types. No one has made a move since UT hiring Tom. If Oregon gets Fleck, then we are in the same place we are in now. This is nothing like the Butch jones situation where there were openings all over the place being filled.

Houston was looking into rehiring Briles (I guess their thought is if he isn't show clause bad no one will steal him away from him again.

Purdue situation for my happiness is Fleck #1 Brohms and Schianno #2. This is the slowest coach carousel I have ever witnessed and I can't blame Oregon making a big move and trying to find a big time hire.

$$$$

That was done to appease fans, no other reason.
Your not going to appease the fans in the middle of the season. No one was jumping for joy in October unless a new coach is brought on to get a jump on recruiting. Texas named a new coach the day they fired Strong

Yeah, Herman's season was done. They didn't name a coach who still had games to play.
So are we going to wait until the bowl season is complete also? Herman's season was not done. If we let the new coach go to the bowl game, we're another month behind.

Doubtful. The quick trigger on Helfrich suggests they want to be able to move on someone soon...someone in the college game...someone who will be able to interview during the bowl interlude. Kelly won't be available until Christmas. Plus, he's already said he wants to stay in the NFL...and, he'd be coming into a rebuilding situation, not smoothly transitioning from Bellotti's succcesful tenure. Why would he want that headache?

No we're not. We're only behind your schedule and nothing more.

Then there was nothing gained by firing DH in October.

No. There was a lot gained from firing DH2 mid-season. The mid-season opening of our HC position gave many coaches around the country, in either hot seats or safe seats, a chance to look at the Purdue job proactively during the season. They could carefully consider the job over a period of time and under the safety of their own jobs. This included people like Fleck, Calhoun, Miles, Schiano, etc.

If Purdue promptly fired DH2 last Sunday afternoon, the Purdue job would be officially open but too late for coaches and their agents to carefully look at it. Given the short notice and the other recent HC openings, people like Fleck would likely pass up in Purdue and look at other opportunities. The mid-season firing helped generate interest from around the country whereas the end of season firing would have been lost with all the other end of season firings.
