One of the worst officiated games of the year (which is saying something)

What a horrible crew for the game tonight, and whereas the general refrain is that officiating should not decide the game, these three clowns absolutely have had a say thus far in the way that the game has played out, and they are primed to be the difference.

Driscoll is just bad in general, and he has outdone himself tonight...his ridiculous make-up call (for his own "bad" call nonetheless, despite it actually having been one of the very few that he actually did get right) on a phantom PJ Thompson foul was laughable...he might as well just have waved to Matta so as to acknowledge that his bitching about the previous call had been rewarded.

Eades was horrible in the first half in particular, and I just can't stand how smug he is.

Scirotto offers nothing either...a bystander with the other two clowns, but he managed to be sure to work in a couple of really lousy calls as well just so as to not be left out of the fun.

Preach!

Uh oh, the internet tough guys are coming to tell you not to complain about officiating and they don't affect games.

Typical Value City refereed game.....sooo glad this one is behind us. But way to gut it out Boilers!!

I agree... I thought for sure they were going to call a F1 on DM for a head butt. I do wish CMP would work the refs more. OSU almost pulled this one out because of all Matta's complaining.

Scirotto is one of the worst. He's like 5'5" and I don't think he really ever played the game. He makes awful calls around the basket.

If it hadn't been for the pivotal shot clock violation miss, we wouldn't have got a call the entire second half. But since we got one, I'm glad it was that one.
About time we caught a break against the Bucknuts. They are talented but have a poor collective basketball IQ. That team should be better than it is.

Thad Matta cries about every call that doesn't go his way, one thing I always disliked about him
Agree, but no different than Izzo in that regard...and Bo Ryan may have actually been worse than either of them.

It is one thing to "work" the officials...another to just blatantly bitch for the course of a game.

How Matta could even complain defied logic, never mind that he was completely wrong...but it paid off immediately, as Driscoll caved and made his lousy make-up call on literally the very next time that OSU touched the ball. I still can't get past that it was a make-up call...for his own call...that pretty much sums up Driscoll though.

Except, they do...all too often for that matter.

Hard to imagine, but I am hard pressed to think of a case where the B1G could actually put together a respectable three-man crew, as I don't think there are three capable guys...tonight was the reverse tri-fecta.

I think Matta's behavior is the worst - It distracts from the game with all that emotion and head grabbing. I wish the camera man would just not show Matta. Of course, we then would not understand the crazy make up calls.

I don't dislike that he works the officials. A good coach should. I dislike that the officials give him the calls though.
I remember a Purdue/Wisconsin game in Mackey a couple of years ago...Gene Steratore (another guy that I can't stand) was late getting in for the game, so there was a guy that filled in that was a guy that I was familiar with from NAIA games...he was not great at the NAIA level, so not sure how he ended up being the guy to fill in, and admittedly, he appeared a bit overwhelmed (if not overmatched) working a B1G game...but I remember he had made a couple of calls against Wisconsin and Bo Ryan was beside himself...just relentless in riding the guy (and the others because of that guy's "mistake(s))...it was a close game at the half...and then I remember Bo walking out of the tunnel after the half with his arm around Steratore's shoulders, and the game was called completely differently in the second half and Wisconsin won comfortably.

I might be biased and I do know there are games where we get the calls but it doesn't seem as often at home as they go against us on the road. Felt like the Minnesota game was called fairly evenly which is like getting screwed when you go on the road and face calls like we faced tonight.

Some of us are tough even though we're on Internet. Though, the refs were horrible and Painter needs to work them, I wouldn't go there one way or the other in w/l column. Purdue did everything they could to help OSU win down the stretch. Purdue is extremely fortunate to get that win and as glad as I am they won I am still at the same complaint I had before. No anger in these guys. They're happy go lucky and that's not going to get it done. Playing with sheer anger on a mission is what I expect out of them. On a mission with angst in every go. Not there still. Got away with this one. Not enough out of others in terms of being ready to swing. Happy they won nonetheless.

Sorry to go all Kess on you, but

What you've just typed is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read it.

Your larger texts don't make what you said any louder. They won but that idn gonna get er done down the stretch. OSO did everything they could to help Purdue. Too much soft licken out there. They had a ten point lead OSU called time out and at games most critical turn it's tied in minutes. It's just pure laying down. Glad Swan followed up his misses or we lose period.

I have long contended that there are calls made against Purdue at Mackey that simply are not made at other places against the home team...a great example was the call in OT on Sunday where Mathias had stepped willingly out of bounds...it may have been the "right" call even, but, please tell me when you last saw that call made, if ever? It simply is never called, never mind in OT at a crucial point...against the home team...could you even imagine that happening at The Hall of Calls? In East Lansing? No chance...at that is only one example...there are multiple calls like that...in the Iowa game, PJ got fouled, then got fouled again before it was actually called, and Steratore stepped in and had a 10-second call enforced instead. Like say, I think the quality of officiating in the B1G is just really poor...but I have long felt like while Purdue may get a call here or there at home, as you said, it does not even out with respect to calls that they don't get on the road or calls that the home team does in those occasions, and I still feel like they get bad calls at home that other teams just don't.

This is nothing new. This this is the Big Ten. It always has been bad calls by the refs and perhaps always will be.

I subscribe to the theory that all officiating - college and pro - are equally bad from a distribution standpoint. So it makes zero sense for me from a personal value perspective to complain ever about it. Every bad call my team has ever received has also benefited from an equally bad call at some other point for another team.

I felt the same as many of you...lopsided calls, Haas getting mugged regularly, Matta's childish antics when any call went against OSU, Painter not working the refs, etc.

However, I was and have been very proud of our guys. They know, more than any of us, how bad they get burned by the refs. No eye gouging, no tripping, no tantrums, nobody getting T'd up. We have a class team. That reflects well on the coaches and their character.

Proud to be a Boiler.

An F1 might have been one of the worst calls I ever saw. Dakota just rocked to take off and their heads bump. Dakota didn't even know he was that close. The way things were going...they could have called it, but boy would THAT have been awful!

This team is pretty level headed, mature and quality people it seems. There is a mental toughness some players have to not get rattled at the slightest of things and Purdue has a few of those.

That would have been worse than the DJ Byrd flagrant foul at Madison Square Garden against Villanova a few years ago which is probably my all-time worst call that simply cost us that game.

Worse than MSU 1990 or Memphis in the 1995 NCAAs?

Agree
Glad our guys don't act like some of the msu or iu guys do after a bad call (present or past teams).
t.bryant is especially bad.

Both games were before I graduated from high school so I'm not sure I have the same recollection as people who were die hard fans for those games. I was not a huge fan before I went to Purdue. I'm sure I watched the Memphis game but have little memory of it. I doubt I saw the 1990 game at all.

Thad looked like a muppet last night.

also, there are no amount of calls we can get in that building that make up the absolute hit job on the baby boilers there. Jim Burr and Tim Higgins fouled out Keaton Grant and Marcus Green and cost us a B1G championship in an overtime hit job I'm still salty about. STILL SALTYYYYYYYYY.
