Once upon a time, Purdue won the NCAA Championship with only one loss all year.
Once upon a time, Purdue reached the NCAA’s Final Four three times in eight years.
Once upon a time, Purdue was ranked for the majority of 17 seasons in 19 years.
Once upon a time, Purdue made appearances in the rankings for 22 straight years.
Once upon a time, Purdue won seven Big Ten titles in 12 years with four different coaches.
Once upon a time, Purdue finished in the Big Ten’s top three teams for 19 of 22 years.
Once upon a time, Purdue won 77 percent of Big Ten games in 19 years under four coaches.
Once upon a time, Purdue won 77 percent of all games in 19 years under four coaches.
Once upon a time, Purdue had a 14-5 all-time series lead over Notre Dame.
Once upon a time, Purdue had not been swept by Indiana in its season series in 33 years.
Once upon a time, Purdue had not lost to Ball State for 16 straight games over 37 years.
Once upon a time, Purdue had never lost to IUPUI.
Once upon a time, Purdue’s home games drew an average of 9,000 to 10,000-plus.
Once upon a time, Purdue had two McDonald’s All-Americans with two more signed.

That’s not a fairytale or ancient history. It was Purdue’s women from 1987 to early 2006. Then came the fall, started by a term paper and phone calls. The coaching staff was forced out, prior to NCAA sanctions. The All-American recruits were granted their requests to go elsewhere, too. Their replacements fell well short, and their successors have kept on falling.

Now, Purdue has two NCAA Elite Eights in the past 12 years … none in the past nine.
Now, Purdue has not advanced past the NCAA’s Second Round for the last nine years.
Now, Purdue has fully missed the NCAA Tournament three times in the last nine years.
Now, Purdue has been ranked for the majority of three seasons in the last 11 years.
Now, Purdue has not appeared once in the rankings for five of the last nine years.
Now, Purdue has not finished higher than a tie for second in the Big Ten in the last 11 years.
Now, Purdue has won 59 percent of Big Ten games in the last 12 years.
Now, Purdue has won 64 percent of all games in the last 12 years.
Now, Purdue has lost eight straight games against Notre Dame in a 14-13 series.
Now, Purdue has suffered its first season sweep by IU in 33 years … 3 losses by 47 points.
Now, Purdue has lost to Ball State for the first time since the 1970s … in 2017 … at home.
Now, Purdue has a loss to IUPUI, in 2016 at home, avenged by a whopping 48-46 win.
Now, Purdue’s average home attendance barely tops 6,000.
Now, the only McDonald’s around is a fast-food chain with three stores in West Lafayette.

No denying this. Can it be turned around? It seems that only paying big money for a name coach who can recruit on the highest levels will turn the trick and it is hard to fathom why such a coach would come here. WBB has elite programs that stay at the top and there are a bunch of programs underneath that including Purdue. It is possible that Purdue could be one of the best in the BT next year and still not compete nationally. The BT is down. Even OSU and Md didn't do very well and they have been the class. It is easy to state the problem and the history, not so easy to figure the solution. Just getting rid of a coach guarantees nothing.
P.S. McGraw and ND are one of those elite programs. The two programs were neck and neck when Riley beat us for our second championship with that shot. The scandal that wrecked our recruiting also turned it for them and they got the players we might have gotten and the rest is history.
P.S.S. Yes it is possible to rise to the top as Louisville and Miss State have shown, but it ain't easy.

Well said, except that the real attendance is no where near even half of your number---I'd guess 1000-1500 at an average game. The numbers Purdue announces are bogus. Did you see the crowd at IU last night? Huge, but not 6000.

I dispute the claim that we were among the "bunch of programs underneath the elite"---we were ONE of the elite. This was right before / during the rise to dominance of UCONN, and we were neck and neck with anyone and everyone. We ended Stanford's long home court win streak, and we beat #1Tennessee to end their 2+ year long undefeated string. We WERE in the elite, and that should never be in doubt. And why do have so many reasons and excuses as to why we can't be elite again? Why the fear of a new staff? Sure, it may not happen with a new staff, and it may be difficult to attain, but to think we're going to get there with the type of talent (on the bench and beside the bench) we have today---it isn't going to happen. So we remain settlers, full of excuses.
