Ok, now that it's done, who's hearing what about a hire?

Anyone hearing 'credible' rumors?
I have a buddy who's a big time donor, but he might have to sign a NDA if he's consulted.

Two of the coaches I would like to talk to are playing in a championship game next week... UNLV vs Boise

Hadn't heard Mullen's name thrown around but there's a case to be made...

Dan Mullen, Former Florida/Mississippi State Head Coach
Is Mullen interested in a return to the sidelines after working the past three years at ESPN? Although Mullen was dismissed at Florida, he still compiled a 34-15 mark from 2018-21 and won the SEC East title in ’20. Prior to the stint in Gainesville, Mullen went 69-46 at Mississippi State from 2009-17. Mullen's name could pop up in searches at North Carolina and UCF.

Part of our challenge could be that the best, proven head coaches are likely taking their teams to postseason play. That somewhat delays their ability to immediately engage — both personally and any staff that they bring along — and begin the turnaround at Purdue with total focus.

Or you can be like Jeff Brohm and just say “screw it” and leave your former team and players in a bad place. And while I do not believe in karma, I do believe that this type of behavior eventually catches up with the perpetrator.

Still like the Iowa State coach, and the Liberty coach looks interesting to me as well.

I don't know a ton about him but I think he would have to be looked at, if in fact he's interested in getting back on the sidelines.

I suggested him a couple weeks ago. He would be a great choice if he’s interested.

I’m hearing that Kevin Wilson’s people have been contacted, and that PU’s interest has been reciprocated.

I hope not. Older coach, in his 60's, was fired from Indiana from a scandal, kind of Bobby Knight lke wthout out the wnnng, just treatng the players like crap and he was awful at Tulsa very recently.

I hope Purdue can get better, I dont think we can get Nick Sabon out of retirement, but I would hope we can do better than Kevin Wilson.

Mike Day may becoming available soon, though do we want someone who can't beat UM?

What? Too soon?

Seems like leftovers
It makes sense. He has B1G HC experience, he wants to be a big time HC again, and PU would like to get back to a “basketball on grass” product AND he is affordable.

This is real. Not saying it will happen, but the stars may be lining up quickly here.

If this was after brohm then i agree a great hire. Purdue is a hot mess right now. Criteria 1) success as a head coach and my preference would be mutiple stops 2) can bring his staff for a quick transition 3) can bring some players perferably a starting qb 4) has an offensive backround. That would be my criteria in order of importance. Mullen just cant do 2-3 and purdue needs a quick transition with immediate upside from an ability to retain and bring in players.

I would imagine he has many contacts and is a name very recognizable. He would be able to recruit well just due to name recognition alone along with past success.

No way - 63 years old and limited success.
Just canned at Tulsa
Not to be that guy, but firing a HC after only two years isn’t exactly opening the market to big time candidates. Plus, $$ is an issue and PU wants an experienced HC who can bring an exciting offence to WL. Like the good old Tiller days. This appears to check a lot of boxes.

But as I said, this may not happen but they are talking. We’ll see.

Any coach can look at the past two years and see that Walters needed to be fired. If a coach is worried about being fired for going 1-11, then I don’t want that coach anyways. I want a coach with confidence, not one that is looking for job security.

If we hire a 63 year old coach, fired multiple times, with an overall record of 33-63, we are dumber than I first believed.
And in the new world order, getting canned after 2 epically and historically bad seasons should be understood - it’s not like we fired him after going .500 or better like others have already done.

He would be a solid hire and maybe a great hire in time. At this particular point in time i hope we can find someone who meets the criteria in my previous post. If not, i would be generally hapoy with him. Winning at miss state is tough and he did well there.

He would definitely bring the name rec and energize the fanbase. He's got mega-program experience and success. Knows how to recruit vs the big boys. Not going to be blinded by playing UM, OSU, PSU, etc. Recruiting in the south.

These are my thoughts as well. Yes he really did have something rolling at IU but outside of that incomplete turnaround he has been awful. If someone at Purdue reached out to him then they should join Walters in the unemployment line.

No perspective coach is worried about a team firing a guy after 2 years and literally one of the worst seasons at a school filled with terrible seasons.

What makes you think money is an issue? Do you have access to the financials of the ath dept?
if iu is willing to commit $72M to their HC, then Purdue should be able to easily exceed that.

IU only did so after that coach won his first 9 games or whatever. Let's quit talking like they went out and threw that kind of money at him before he proved anything in Bloomington.

Some speculation it’s someone that is coaching a conference champion (but not someone in playoffs). My guess is it’s Helton from western Kentucky.

I was talking with someone with connections into ND's supporters. Word on the ground was they were going to make a run at Cignetti and the contract extension was somewhat in response to those rumors.

Doesn't matter. What matters is that a doormat program like iu made the commitment. They raised the bar and now Purdue has to meet it. Which means, you better make sure this next hire is as close to a sure thing as you can get and in order to do so, you'll have to commit big $ upfront.
This is not a "prove it" business. It's a "get paid well, and if you win, you'll get paid even more well".

Of course....Purdue could always go out there, hire a coordinator without HC experience for $3M and hope it works out....

No way. Shepard has them at 11-1 and in the playoff.
