If Trump wanted to communicate a proposal where some illegal immigrants would get to stay or that he was offering them a path to citizenship, then he failed miserably at communicating that proposal. For example here's an interview where he had 6 or 7 openings to suggest something other than deporting ALL illegals, and he didn't jump on any of those opportunities:

I didn't read every word but in that transcript it appeared he wanted to deport all illegals first, and then let SOME of the deported back in. Which is of course different than an in-place path to citizenship.
IMO there's no way in hell Trump offered up the most "nuanced and appropriate" stance on immigration. I'd say he's offered up one of the worst immigration platforms in my lifetime--if not the worst. The Libertarian ticket has a very sensible and unambiguous set of proposals here (e.g. for a super-quick glance, see here:
