NW beating Iowa by 32...

.....with 5 minutes to go in the game. Game is in Evanston.

That loss should not have happened
It is only because Purdue wore them out/down the other night...

You are right, there is no way that loss should have happened,..there is not a valid excuse, despite many of them having been offered...not the first time though that it has happened in terms of losing a game that they definitely should not have, and am pretty confident that it won't be the last time that it happens either.

There aren't "excuses" why Purdue lost. This is a Big Ten season that a bunch of teams aren't going to end the season with 2 or 3 losses. We're in mid-January and all but 2 teams have 2 losses or more in conference play. Wisconsin lost to us and Maryland lost to Nebraska at home. Northwestern lost to Michigan State and Minnesota. Michigan State has lost to Penn State and Ohio State.

Shit's going to happen, particularly on the road. And again, Purdue wasn't even picked going into the season to be in the top 3 of the Big Ten, so I'm not sure where these expectations are coming from. Nobody's happy that we lost, but it's also not the end of the world.

Where Purdue was picked going into the season is entirely irrelevant...it means nothing...no better example than Baylor not even having received a single top 25 vote and then being ranked #1 in the nation a week ago. Entering B1G play, Purdue, IU and Wisconsin were the clear favorites and picked by actually everyone at that point to be in the top 3, if not to win the league.

The problem is not that $hit happens...it is that the same $hit happens...and it doesn't just happen on the road.

I could not care less about who else has how many ever number of losses, I only care about Purdue...and it is simple as this...Purdue has two losses that it should not have, and came perilously close to a third...it had nothing to do with where the game(s) were played, and everything to do with how Purdue played in them.

Nobody ever said that it was the end of the worlds, never mind insinuated it...but it is equally ridiculous to dismiss it or just accept it as mere fate or circumstance.

So there is an appropriate amount of teeth-gnashing that must occur?

FWIW, I think Purdue is still likely to finish in the top 3 in the Big Ten. Not likely to finish ahead of Wisconsin but Wisconsin was probably the favorite to win it pretty much every step of the way from the preseason through now.

If by teeth gnashing you mean discussing the pros and cons of coaching strategy, I say yep, yep. That's what I believe this thingy is here for. Here's to a great effort and big win tonight

But again, you're coming up with varying measurables. You don't give the team credit when it plays well and you nitpick on things that weren't ever a thing until they happen. People are complainYou say preseason picks mean nothing - and no, they don't - but when you start acting like Purdue's a failure for not being in first place the entire conference season, they do matter because that expectation was grasped out of midair. Maybe complain more about IU doing terrible because they're in a lot worse of a situation than us.

Wisconsin got worked by us at home. Do you think that means they're horrible since we're horrible?

Get over yourself and your personal vendetta - and look at things in a realistic world. The conference season is long - half the conference is within a game of first place.

People are complaining about our defense when they've complained we focus too much on defense for years. People are complaining that we can't hold serve at home - we have the second best home record over the last 3 years in the Big Ten.

There is no "consistency" in college basketball. You want us to play perfect basketball every game and never make mistakes. Well, it's not gonna happen. And there's no Big Ten team that is - hell look at how Wisconsin played against us.

It's fine to get frustrated with things - I don't think anyone was thrilled we let two very close games get away from us. But it's still early in Big Ten play and they've also done a lot of great things - like beat the highest ranked team in the Big Ten handily. All you focus on is the negative stuff because you want it to turn out negative because you have this magical vendetta against our alum who coaches our team and think you know all the solutions to our problems. And I can tell you one thing - you'll never be happy, so might as well find something else to do.

Young team coming off overtimes games, and slugfest vs the boilers. Northwestern is really good.
