Nova coming to Mackey

OH HELL YES!

This is awesome. I thought they would give us a sucky opponent. It will be a great game.

This has single handedly has convinced me to renew my PaintCrew tickets. No way I am missing this one.

Nice recruiting tool for getting a high quality 5th year senior?

This is great news though. I would rather lose a couple games in pre-conference play against great opponents than coast into conference play without being tested. Not to say we will lose this game, but obviously it's a risk.

Will Villanova be as good this season?

It depends on what happens with Hart and jenkins. But if they both return, Nova should be good again. Most were viewing next yr as the season when Nova would be poised for a deep tourney run.

Lose arcidiacono and Ochefu, which is obviously big, but the replacement pieces are still real nice. 2 big newcomers are 2015 A10 rookie of the year eric paschall (sat out this yr for transfer, but practiced with the team. The A10 is an inconsistent conference, but they do have some good players). The other newcomer is a top 20/ 5 star freshman, omari spellman. A big body center who might be a little overwhelmed against Purdue but by the spring could be good. Also, redshirt freshman, donte divincenzo Will probably see some minutes (think Bobby sura type off guard)

rotation next year should be
Position: starter/back up (note, nova plays two pgs at the same time a lot, and tend to run up to 3 wimg players (the shooting guard/small forward type), wish I label W)

Pg1: brunson / booth
Pg2/W1: booth/ hart/ paschall
W1/ W2: hart/ paschall/ bridges
W2/ W3/ big: jenkins/ bridges/ reynolds
Big: reynolds/ spellman

So they lose Archi, but Brunson takes over at the point, booth's role increases, and paschall is eligible which makes them more athletic.
They lose chef but reynolds takes over and splits time with spellman.
If Hart goes pro, move paschall up one spot in the rotation and add divincenzo as on ether sg in ten rotation.

The thought is that next year's teams should be more athletic/quick on defense and have a greater ability of creating offense out of the half court. It will be less effective in the post in the half court set, and loses some experience at the primary ball handling position and overall leadership.

Translation: Purdue is gonna whoop Nova by 30.

Thanks for the insight, homie! Boiler Up!

Purdue is supposed to be good again next year, correct?

The only games I saw you play last yr were the Butler game and the UALR game, but I remember thinking your team had good size. I remember I didn't want to see Purdue as a 7 seed in the dance.

Purdue loses two BIG defensive players of the year in AJ Hammons anf Raphael Davis. We also lose a sometime starter at point guard in Hill.
AJ in particular is a big loss on both ends of the floor.
Purdue returns the core of the team in Juniors 7'-2" Haas, athletic wing 6'-8" Edwards, PG PJ Thompson, 6'-5" SG Dakota Mathias all of whom started for Purdue last season.
Purdue adds a pretty good PG as a freshman and probably another fifth year or juco guy.
Purdue will again be very young with possibly no senior on the team. Our only current senior to be, is a sharp shooter that has asked for his release and may or may not be back.
IMO Purdue will take some time adjusting to the loss of AJ but if Haas can play extended minutes, Purdue should again be a top 20 team.

Butler and Little Rock were games that Purdue fans would like to forget, but your impression that Purdue had good size was absolutely correct.

Purdue might be better next year than this. It is hard to say. Seven footer, AJ Hammons, will be gone, which is a huge loss, but 7'2" Isaac Haas returns and is ready to play increased minutes and a much bigger role. Haas is very tough to guard without fouling, but sometimes struggles with foul trouble himself. His lack of quickness can also be exploited when he is on defense, although he made great strides as a defender as a sophomore.

Rapheal Davis also graduates, which should hurt the defense, but may help the offense. His replacement at the 2, Dakota Mathias, is a very good player, but will be challenged by Nova's athleticism.

Caleb Swanigan and Vince Edwards are testing the waters with the NBA, but I expect them both to return. Either would be a big loss if he didn't come back. I think that Edwards needs to step up and be a star on the wing. He's a talented player who can do a little of everything. Swanigan needs to become more efficient and better on defense, but he is very talented and tough to guard in the post.

Purdue will once again have good size and good shooting, but the ability to handle the press will be a question mark until proven otherwise. Purdue brings in a 4 star point guard, but I don't think anyone expects him to be able solve Purdue's challenges in this area on his own. Nova's quickness and pressure will be tough for Purdue's backcourt to handle.

I am looking forward to this. I would rather play them in April, but November/December will have to do. Nova saved all of us from having the cheating UNC team with another banner.

These games are tricky because - you think the Big Ten/ACC games are played early in the season (usually the first few days of December), the Big East games - at least last year - were played in the first week of the season. We may play one tune-up real game before this one.

Playing an aggressive schedule doesn't seem to impede MSU. I say play the best level of competition you can get into Mackey and don't be afraid to travel. You make the NCAA based on your conference record primarily, so as long as you win more than 50% nonconference you are fine.

WTH, go out to the westcoast and play Gonzaga...UCLA, etc. Creighton in the midwest?

I have no problem with our schedule last year or next year other than the tournaments appear to have been or will be somewhat weaker. Last year we had six non-conference games against decent competition. ODU, Florida, Pittsburgh, Butler, New Mexico, Vanderbilt. Next year will be a bit tougher with 2 decent opponents in our tournament (probably Auburn/Texas Tech), Crossroads game against ND, Gavitt Game against Nova, ACC road game, and Arizona State in MSG. They might be able to squeeze another home-and-home series in there but every time you do that you take away the revenue from a future home game. I think that's why you don't see a ton of big matchups on homecourts other than the arranged ones like the Gavitt Games and the ACC Challenge.

I'm happy with the non-conference scheduling so far for next season. Bloom has done about as good of a job as you can possibly expect up to this point.

there'll be two Painters in the house, Nova got a 6'10 recruit named Dylan Painter.

Yep, and they'll have Fordham transfer Eric Paschall (led Fordham in scoring in '14-'15), and freshman fringe 4/5 star big named Omari Spellman. They're still going to be very good, with Arcidiacono and Ochefu (Josh Hart might stay in the draft: we'll see) being their only significant losses.

It was just made public that Ronnie Johnson will transfer from Houston to Auburn for his final season of eligibility. Purdue and Auburn are both slated to be in the Cancun Challenge this coming season. That would be a fun game to watch.
