Kevin Sumlin now has the opportunity to return to his alma mater, the same school where he starred as a four-year starter at linebacker, the same school where he helped build and coach a Rose Bowl team, developing receivers all three years for Drew Brees, and the school closest to where he grew up and to where he still has family.

Meanwhile he can leave the school where many placed him on “the hot seat” and called for his dismissal despite a 36-16 record for his first four years, the second-best start by a coach in school history, where his .692 winning percentage is nearly 100 points better than the school’s overall winning percentage and where his current 6-0 start and Top Ten national ranking far exceeds the norm for Aggie football. Why the heat there? Because of Johnny Football’s behavior, because of assistants who made bad jokes at clinics and because Aggies now think that 8-5 just stinks despite playing Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina and the rest of the SEC. He can leave that crap behind and rebuild the program he’s venerated with his presence twice before.

They are about to go from 6-0 to 8-4 or 9-3 real quick. They still have to play Ole Miss, Bama and LSU. There is no garuntee he is still the coach at the end of the year.

Highly doubt he will want to leave the SEC and A&M for the utter disaster that is Purdue. Even if he were fired after this season, which he won't be, he would have opportunities for much better jobs than PU. Don't get mad, it's just reality.

LSU stinks. Ole Miss is ok. Not sure how that equates to 3 or 4 losses.

LSU stinks? Hardly. Miles was their problem. It's no coincidence that they fired him and their offense suddenly came alive. He and Cam's scheme were that bad. LSU will most likely only lose to Bama at this point.

Ole Miss is much better than ok. Easily offensively on the level of Bama with a slightly worse defense. TAMU won't win the game.

Yeah nothing to do with who LSU has played the last 2 weeks. They ain't beating A&M.

They played worse teams earlier and couldn't score on them.

The offense is totally different but I don't expect you to understand. I've BEEN to more SEc games than you've likely watched all year though but yes...you are the expert

A & M's defense is improved this year.....I could see them ending up with only two losses, one being Alabama.

I think Purdue's shot at getting Sumlin has long past but there are still some good opportunities to get a good coach......it's gonna take some time to rebuild and improve the recruiting results.

Everyone on this board should be able to appreciate the appeal of an alma mater. It’s a passion that doesn't fade. And it can’t be bought.

Sumlin is 11 years younger than Miles, who turns 63 in four weeks. And, unlike the up-and-coming names being tossed about, Sumlin isn’t a head coach who would use Purdue as a springboard to bigger things. He’d build it to own it.

His experience and permanent ties would make him worth every penny of investment.

Even if he has that love for his alma mater, is he or anyone else going to walk away from $5M a year salary at a top 15 program in a football recruiting hot bed? We're not matching that salary AND paying Hazell. Our only chance of landing him is a total mid season Aggie collapse and a hostile situation where he sees the writing on the wall to be willing to walk away and accept less money per year for longer term security. 9-3 or 8-4 isn't getting him fired with three years left on the contract.
LONG shot to say the least.

Nice thoughts. Agreed on everything.

Ain't happening.

Miles=Akers. 62 yr old has-been looking to cash in one last time before collecting social security. Next HC must be young, dynamic, intense and most importantly an offensive innovator or at least offensive background. He has to come in first yr and create excitement-we are losing our fanbase.PJ Fleck meets this criteria. PU would immediately be relevant again. Future clashes with Harbaugh, Wilson and other a-holes on sidelines or post game will give fans, team, school a sense of renewed interest, involvement each week.I'll admit some of his crap is off-putting. My wife has personality "quirks" too-I deal with it. M Bob please dont make the "safe hire" again like past AD's (Demoss, Agase, Burtnett, Akers, Colleto, Hope, Hazell) This is an opportunity-get on the phone NOW with Flecks agent-start talking- and yes it will cost 3mil but dont get soft-not again-STRIKE NOW!

Former Boilermakers who’ve been around a while would devote and do far more for this program than up-and-coming flash-in-the-pans from smaller schools -- haven’t you had enough of those? Older coaches who once toiled at the top levels would be very hard-pressed to generate and sustain the necessary efforts here. And we sure can’t afford to have someone’s coordinator come in and learn on the job.

I'd put my money on Boilermakers.

Curious why you would say that. Guy is at least a hell of a recruiter, even at Purdue.

Have & will always call Sumlin overrated.
Guy goes to Houston & does great when he has Case Keenum, the qb he inherited, but falls apart when Keenum gets hurt & he has to play his own qb. Keep in mind, Houston still had THREE 1,000yd WRs and TWO 1,000yd RBs on the roster and he couldn't make it work.

He then goes to a Texas A&M team that fired their coach after starting as a Top 10 team following a 9-4 season. In walks Sumlin to all that talent, including a qb named Johnny that Phil Steele said was going to be special, and had his best season. ...He then gets progressively worse as Sherman's guys leave and has leveled-off at 8-5...

Nope, let someone else spend $ for him.
The guy cannot win without having one of the best qbs in that school's history playing for him; That qb had better already be on the roster because nothing has shown that Sumlin can recruit him...

In other words, you wouldn't want the guy who has built / rebuilt two Texas programs twice apiece, the guy who in just four years became the second winningest coach in Houston's history, the guy who had the second-best four-year start in A&M's history, the guy with multiple links to Purdue and Tiller both as a player and a coach? Who started here at linebacker for all four years while playing alongside Woodson, Dishman, Spack, Strickland, Gray and Everett? Who coached the receivers all three years for Brees?

Cannot win? What do you call 77-34? Leveled off at 8-5? Is that the same as 6-1?

Sorry, we're not digging up Mollenkopf or Lombardi. Besides, Jack's career record wasn't as good as Sumlin's, and Vince ended up only 7-5 with the 'Skins. They’re surely subpar to you, too.

In other words, you wouldn't want the guy who has built / rebuilt two Texas programs twice apiece.

He DIDN'T build them. Once he lost the quarterbacks that he inherited, he was never the same coach. The team took a total nosedive when Keenum went down even though Sumlin had had plenty of recruiting time to have the next guy in the pipeline. At A&M, he again inherited a team with Top 10 talent from the year prior, had Johnny already there, and rolled at first. Now that he has his own guys? He'll go 2-1 the rest of the way in the SEC, beat up on two more cupcakes (3 on his schedule this yr) and likely lose in a bowl.

The guy is a nothing special.
I'll pass...

Your opinion says one thing; the facts say another.

Sumlin took over a Houston program that finished 34-29 and 8-26 under his two immediate predecessors; his teams went 36-17. His last team there was 13-1 -- he exited with the best season in school history for his fourth year. His immediate successor’s teams were only 21-17. In Houston’s 71 years of football, Sumlin ranks second all-time in victories and third in winning percentage.

Sumlin took over an A&M program that was 26-25 and 32-29 under his two immediate predecessors; his teams have gone 42-17, including 6-1 with a Top Ten ranking this year. Again, he quickly rose among the most successful coaches in school history despite having to make the move into the nation’s strongest conference. He already ranks third for the most wins over ranked teams (9), including a school-record three road wins over Top Ten teams, and he’s tied for the most bowl victories (3) at A&M.

In both cases, he clearly outperformed his predecessors while also showing he overcomes adversity by immediately compiling his best season. And all eight of his teams have averaged more than 400 yards per game in offense, with five averaging over 500, and his teams have scored over 500 points five times.

Not special? He’s been a national coach of the year finalist three times in his first eight years as a head coach.

Like I said, a Boilermaker worth every penny.

Listen, I get the Sumlin love. I don't necessarily agree with 100% of it, but I get it. But it's a worthless discussion unless Sumlin gets fired this year (which he won't). I believe we may pay up to $4MM a year for a coach (which is probably overly optimistic). No way we get him for that. Sumlins not giving up that kind of cash just because he loves Purdue.

Just as soon as it becomes the school that founded the Big Ten Conference instead of one that jumps from one second-tier to another.

Just as soon as it leads all other schools in all-time NFL passing yardage and touchdowns, led by one of his former products.

Just as soon as it beckons on the heels of widespread irrational and ungrateful whining at his current job where only one or two have done it better.

His case provides the best reason to dig deepest ... taking care of one of our own who's a proven winner and a perfect model.

And, in addition to all the cash and memories we can muster, we offer not only an escape from true ungrates, but family reunions that no one else and no amount of cash can match.

Way down the list of considerations when looking at a career choice.

Before your start, 3rd generation purdue on both sides. Grandfather taught there too.

Careers do not live by bread alone. And, as mentioned repeatedly above, we're much more to him than merely his alma mater.

And glad to hear your family has eliminated defection.

Lets get creative and make him a unique offer. Create equity units in the football program and give him a share (almost like stock options). Or give him 75% of all gross ticket sales over 40k per game in addition to salary and other perks - guaranteed over the life of the contract (choose a number). Drastic times call for new way of thinking. If we want to play with the big boys, we need to share the wealth with whoever leads us there - otherwise we may not find a capable coach....

So wait, some self-entitled negatwitts are calling for a successful coach to be fired simply because of their unrealistic emotions? Huh, that sounds like the same twitts we have running their mouths about wanting Painter fired.

Sumlin would be a great hire for here.

is there a reason people keep saying its hard to recruit to Purdue? I think its something people say to make others think they know a lot about college sports. Ok I got that in, resume whatever it is you are doing.

Man it will suck when this OP turns out right and we have Nobody as the football coach....

Sumlin, Miles and, Herrman imo are not an option for Purdue. Sumin and Herrman are already in better jobs right now making more money than the outgoing Purdue coach.

Sumlin would only ever be an option for Purdue if he gets fired from A&M. Even then he could probably get a better job.

I hope I am wrong, but I just don't see it. Maybe Fleck, maybe.

Comparing the Sumlin and Miles situations makes no sense. Very different. Comparing Sumlin and Tom Herman makes even less sense.

People on here seem to think Purdue can't afford Sumlin. Purdue can afford to pay Sumlin what he makes right now if they want to. It takes a commitment to winning. I think Mike Bobinski and Mike Berghoff both realize this.
