No help next year, but I'd go after him...

This is an interesting situation. As I recall, Duke somewhat "forced" him to reclassify so that they would have a PG this year. He served his purpose and they did what any school would do and recruited someone better behind him. Nothing wrong with that, that's how winners are built. He's doing what he thinks is right for himself.

Nothing wrong with that? Seriously?? So what you are saying is these aren't student athletes, they are extremely low paid professionals making millions for their schools, coaches and television. And people can't fathom why they want to unionize. Go look at the history of unions and why they were formed.

They didn't take his scholarship away. They didn't force him to leave. They just recruited a better player behind him. I am sure, since it's Duke, that he KNEW full well that they were going after the best players at every position. If he chose to stay, get his degree, probably play as a backup ... then he would have received his degree on-scholarship.

Are you saying that Duke should NOT have recruited the best player at his position, since they already had him?????????

Now, on the unionization or the pay to the athletes, that's a whole other topic. I have thoughts, but no time to get into it here.

It's a tough decision. They would have to sacrifice a season without an extra PG option (I believe Thornton is more of a "true" PG than either Thompson or C. Edwards) but maybe it would pay off down the road. His numbers weren't great as a frosh but I believe he has the potential to get a lot better. The expectations from fans, etc. of Duke basketball players to perform well are probably higher there than at any other program not named Kentucky, Kansas, or North Carolina.

He's from California, so I think he would be very tough to get but if they could get him, he might be a good long-term investment.

Take it for what's it worth, but the thought among some is that Duke is still recruiting for the 2016 class (a 5* forward whose name I forget that they think they are strong with). So they aren't oversigned now and cutting bait, but they may be cutting bait so they won't be oversigned if/when they get their guy.

AZ, Cal., USC or UNLV -- wants to go closer to home according to the article....and those are the 4 schools who recruited him earlier that are a lot closer to him than Purdue who did not even recruit earlier.

I'd take him in a heart beat. A future stud PG if he wants to play near home then he should go play for Cuonzo.
Kids always say that, whether true or not. I'm sure he knew Duke wasn't going to be close to home. My guess is if you tell him he's going to see major minutes at the point in 17, he would take a look. Besides, Purdue is closer to home :) I remember Lutz said the same thing and ended up going to socme school that was still far from home.

If memory served, Lutz ended up at Marshall. I don't know where he was from though.

Do you think we need a point guard though?

I think he was from Maine or Conn.

New Hampshire.

Yeah, Chris Lutz's reason for leaving had to be connected to concerns about future PT (Keaton Grant, Chris Kramer, and Tarrance Crump were all returning and E'Twaun was joining) and who knows what else. He transferred to Marshall (Huntington, WV) and had a solid final two seasons with them playing starters minutes, but they did not have any NCAA Tourney appearances.
