That is the way he needs to play. Much quicker around the hoop and much more active on defense and going after rebounds. There is one play in particular where he actually jumped on a shot fake, landed and recovered with another jump to disrupt the shot. He plays like that and we are a much better team.

Very good game for Isaac!

Think his rebounding has picked up as of late. Tonight his offense was efficient because Illinois either didn't double him or didn't do it well when they tried. He's also starting to be more aggressive in trying to block shots. Feels like he plays more freely coming off the bench.

Swanigan did a good job of cutting to the center of Illinois' zone to get the ball and Haas was often times the beneficiary of that.

Difference between being played straight up and being double and triple teamed. Poor strategy employed by Groce.

Actually I was more referring to his defense and rebounding. He was much more aggressive with both.

I agree he was defended poorly. But we set them up perfectly. Gross was worried about the 3 ball before the game. We hit them before Isaac comes in. No one to help because they are worried about the 3.

I would like to see if IH can develop a decent 10 footer. Would help a lot when they push him off the block or defending him tightly.

It also depends on match ups. Illinois is a team that matches up well with Haas - they have a traditional center-sized player.

Some of the games Isaac has struggled - he wasn't a good match-up.

Haas needs to be starting.

Haas needs to be playing at least 25 minutes a game.

Jump ball - PRO - Haas gets most tips. CON - Some stats show teams that don't win tip do better. I never understood that, but it seems we really haven't been trying to get the tip.

Most teams want to be physical and start off attacking the basket. PRO - Opp does not get as many close in shots against Haas. CON - We don't want Haas in early foul trouble.

Match ups. Mason did a good job muscling Caleb and stopping him offensively initially. PRO - I think Caleb would have done much better muscling their forward. CON - This may not been advantageous with teams that don't have a traditional center.

Note - this is no slight at Vince. As a matter of fact, I think Vince will see on the bench how to adapt his game to how the game is going. Vince can decide whether better to slice to the basket as a small forward or post up as a power forward.

Our minutes should go to Caleb, Haas, Vince, Mathis, PJ, Cine, Spike, Smotherman.

IMO both Spike and Smotherman have to be more pest like on D.

The thing is you can't make blanket statements like that. And over 25 minutes a game? There's teams where that will not work. And quite frankly, "at least" 25 (which means more than 25) minutes a game would wear that kid out over the Big Ten season.

I think Painter's done a really good job balancing out his minutes, especially given the injury issue with Taylor. You have to keep in mind that he's balancing playing Haas, playing Swanigan when Haas isn't in there, but also maxing out on Swanigan's time because it's not like Swanigan/Haas are each other's backups. You can't gas Swanigan, but you also really can't have them both out of the game much. And sometimes the most effective time is when they're both playing - but you can't play them both the entire game.

Agree with most of this. It seems IH is much more effective in limited minutes where he can stay fresh. 20 mpg is about right for him. Perhaps a few more minutes in low pace games.

The Smotherman disappearance is troubling as we have not seen too many games where Biggie or IH are in foul trouble, but when it happens (and it will), Basil and/or Eifert are going to be needed to play meaningful minutes. There are no other frontcourt options.

I think at the end of the day, Smotherman's redshirt was the best and worst thing. He definitely got out of playing shape (and not all his fault, injury issues too). Hopefully this means next year he will be in prime shape knowing that's what it will take for him to get minutes.

Is Taylor done for the year? Obviously he's exhausted his redshirt options ha.
