NFL-leading Brees snubbed again but not forgotten

Maybe Drew Brees needs to throw away his old Sportsman of the Year image to gain popularity in the modern-day NFL.

He could destroy his phone during an investigation and fight a suspension for two years and still be hailed as the perfect model.

He could constantly bitch and moan about late hits and throw balls at people after plays and still be lauded as the most valuable.

He could raise dogs for fighting and serve time as a felon and still get featured on the NFL’s own “A Football Life.”

He has to do something, apparently, because leading the NFL in passing yardage, yards per game and completions, plus showing a close second for passing touchdowns and completion percentage, just aren’t enough to gain a Pro Bowl spot these days.

And never mind his five 5,000-yard seasons (which only four others in NFL history have managed, no one else more than once) or his still-rising ranking among the top three all-time passers.

At least Purdue and Saints fans aren’t alone in feeling he’s getting screwed…

He has long been underappreciated...heck, he was underappreciated and overlooked when he was not drafted in the first round.

Like you (and apparently some others), it is mind boggling that it remains the case...yet, while it is bothersome to us, I never get the impression that it is to him.

Unfortunately, I feel like the Saints have not done him any favors, especially here late in his career...no way he has been cared for and treated there by the franchise like either Manning or Brady have been with respect to surrounding him with talent.

It is understandable I guess that he played in the shadows of Brady and Manning, although I have no problem contending that he is/was as good as either individually...but I never understood his playing in the shadows of guys like Cam Newton or Aaron Rodgers, never mind some others.

All of that said...he has long been appreciated by Purdue fans, and forever will be...and as much for what he has done and meant off the field as he has on it...he is hands down one of the greatest QBs of all time, but he is an even better person, and there are not sufficient words for just how great a representative he is of Purdue and for Purdue.

Perhaps a bit lower, but his passer rating would likely be better. And there's not a doubt in my mind he would have better numbers than Prescott.

My immediate comparison is Roger Staubach. The 'Dodger', who served in Nam after his FB career at Navy, never won MVP of the league, despite being one of all-time greats (albeit in another era.) Sports Illustrated practically crapped all over themselves explaining why Roger never was awarded his richly-deserved honor. His best year was his last, but, like Brees, always seemed to be the symbol of class. In my opinion, both men are the face of the league for their respective eras.

As a Falcons fan, I still cringe about the fact that they picked the overrated Dogfighter over Brees. Of course, this is the same franchise that thought Brett Favre wouldn't pan out, so there's that.
