Newman

Could be a really good player if he had a coach who knew how to cater to Newman's strengths.
Missing shots and boneheaded passes that get intercepted? I was glad to see him embrace defense (and openly admitting to not embracing it before the second half of this season) and hoped he would become a stopper next season.

Obviously, Newman shoulders some of the blame, but when you play basketball and constantly are made to feel like you could get yanked at any moment, you end up playing tight and making mistakes.

Too often, players for Painter play tight. That's on the coach. The fact that some can't see this just baffles me.

Look how Aaron Wheeler and Kendall Stephens improved after leaving Purdue.

He will help a team looking for depth and that’s a lot of teams in this age the one and done not going far in the tournament now

I believe Brandon has 2 years left if he chooses, he redshirt and Covid year, is that correct? If this is the case he might be a sneaky good get for a little lower tier school.

Enters the portal - not surprising but did not want to see him leave. Could be a really good player of he would stop having brain facts on the court.

One, imo he could be great in an up tempo system where he can just play to his instincts.

Two, at the end of this year his play showed me he did not get the minutes he deserved. His D on guys late was extremely good when he focused in. Very good rebounder.

Three, had to be frustrating to him seeing Morton out there at his position, who's play out side of a few games where Morton was great.... was average to poor many outings.

Four, sure hate to see athletic guys go out the door on a team that needs all the athletiscm it can get.

Five, I wish him the best of luck. Always enjoyed his play! Thanks for your time here.

Bummer. I wish nothing but the best for him unless he ends up at IU. Like many on here I really wanted him to consistently break through and he unfortunately never did, even when he finally got more PT at the end of the year.

Like others have posted I could see him as a stop gap for the rebuild at ND. I still think he could get 10-15ppg and be a nice 2nd or 3rd option on a good team if he can mentally stay in it.

I think this means Purdue definitely looks to add a PG and CG/SG in the portal if Zach stays. With Bergs foot injury they might want another Forward too.

Far too much class and dignity to wear clownpants.
Lol true, but their roster is gutted and wide open for PT, Woodson likes big guards, and they will throw that NIL cash around until it sticks to someone. It's a longshot, but they need bodies and could do much worse.

I think it will be ND in the end.

More modern? You know that Purdue and Penn State both ran basically the same offense, right? PSU just didn't have a NPOY in the post, so they used Pickett.
Last year, because of personnel (i.e., Edey), Purdue's offense was predominantly feeding a back-to-the-basket big man. That isn't modern.

If the personnel changes -- like it did with Carsen and Haarms -- then, yes, it would be a more "modern" offense.

Not surprising, but disappointing. I have been a fairly outspoken supporter (and defender when necessary) of Brandon, particularly this last season. He always struck me as a 100% Purdue guy, willing to put in the work. There was a tweet early in his career, maybe freshman year, where somebody had walked by the practice facility late after a game and he was getting shots up still in uniform. We have seen flashes of what might have been. I do think, in some ways, he was mismanaged by the coaches and could have been much more useful both last year and this year were it not for that. Someone else mentioned guys playing tight, and I think he’s a great example. He was nothing but class and a great teammate while sitting behind Sasha, IT, and Morton (who I personally believe he might have had the highest ceiling of them all, but we’ll never know now). In any event, I wish him nothing but the best wherever he lands. I hope he goes to ND with Shrews and finishes out his career on a high note. It’s a shame, he deserved a senior day in Mackey.

Newman had what appeared to many as a big upside. Size, great body, appears athletic. But the guy has bad handles. Great athletic moves to the basket, but the ball does not follow. He has as Joe Tiller calls them brain farts with bad turnovers for easy baskets for the opponent. The worst being a pass backward under his own basket. Shooting? Almost always followed a decent three point shooting game with an ofer from three. His defense looks great when he is focused, but he does not stay focused for the few minutes he plays, leaving open threes. The one constant was rebounding, excellent for a big guard.

His attitude was always good, even supporting Morton.

Will he do better in a different program? I hope he does.

Newman was always a classy guy. I wish him the best. I think he was just good enough to flirt with starting, but not good enough to secure the position. At least he was not afraid to shoot in that last game. He, like everyone else, couldn’t hit their shots consistently. Not his fault. God speed Brandon.

Is he a grad transfer? Hope he finished his degree. Anywho best of luck going forward Brandon, thank you !

This is good news. Also need to replace Gillis, Waddell* and Morton with more athletic players.

*Preferred Walk-on should be available.
