Preferred walk on

I'm curious to know if the term "preferred walk on" has a specific definition at Purdue and, if so, how it differs from that of a normal walk on? There was a thread on the IU board which got dragged off course, but left me wondering. Does anyone know if there is a conference standard or does it mean something different at each school?

Nevermind. Just looked it up and he's from Marian. Same as Kirk Barron. Not a bad program to have some ties to in the South Bend area. Would also suggest St. Joe and Penn. Might be tough to land the kids that ND really wants from this area but there are more kids that can play college ball than ND can absorb.

I'll agree with you on this. My son is a preferred walk-on for a Division 1 NCAA track team. he doesn't receive an athletic scholarship, but he's guaranteed a position on the team, and is in line for a scholarship, and receives all the medical assistance and training and other monetary benefits a scholarship player would receive. He also received all the gear and extras scholarship athletes receive including a letterman's jacket. he even redshirted last year due to an injury. His college holds try-outs for their basic walk-ons. You might say in track, they have very few scholarships to give, so they make use of the term preferred redshirt to account for players who may be starters, but not receiving a scholarship.

If the story I linked above is true, the kids is 6'3", 220+ with a 400lb bench & 4.4 speed. Also said kid was a tailback, not a fullback. If this is right, something tells me he'll see the field sooner rather than later...

Although they may not typically utilize a fullback in a traditional sense, I bet we see them as an H-back type of player. This could especially make sense early on since we aren't especially deep at a tight end, though I do realize we have two potentially good ones there. Never pass up on a good player, especially one willing to walk-on.

Agree with this. I wonder if he can play DE

Saw Zander play several times last fall, my kids went to Marian, daughter graduated with Kirk B. Didn't know he was interested in PU but had heard he was interested in engineering. It's only 3A competition, but this kid stands out ability wise and physically

Marian is becoming a damn good football program. Zander is a stud. I'm really surprised he didn't get more D1 offers. Penn is obviously the top program in the area. St. Joe has really gone south. Marian and Penn have been the two programs to consistently put out D1 talent. Especially basketball for Marian.

Numbers seem fairly accurate. He has one of those fathers that never lets up on their kids. Kid lived in the gym. I think it's a great pick-up for Purdue. Definitely a loss for Indiana, where he originally was committed to. Flipped to major in engineering.

Speed, strength, and work ethic , gets this young man on the field soon.

It basically means that the "preferred" walk-on has a guarantee to make the 105 man team roster (i.e. he won't show up, try-out and potentially find out that he won't be on the team come fall).
