i was impressed with the athleticism and skill of New Mexico. I also thought they were well coached. I do think the game was closer because our 3-pt shots were off, but NM played a good game.

They played fast and really hustled. It was good to see Purdue handle two teams in a row that played very hard. Great prep for the B1G season.

They were, but (like you mentioned) we were 3-21 from 3, while turning it over 19 times, and we still won by 12.

And no Ray Day.

NM was tough, but reading all that we should have been beaten easily, but we won by double digits. Amazing IMO.

We wore them down, fouled them out, and were just too deep. They couldn't last. Think we might see that a few times this season. Pretty stout squad we have this year, that's for sure.

First and foremost, credit to NM for a heck of a game (painter said it would be good win for Purdue), but I wondered if Purdue might've had a slight hang-over from the battle at Pitt as well - Edwards was very uncharacteristic with his sloppy play at times.

The loss of Ray I thought was beginning to show. Hill did a great job on Neal but no way he goes off in the first half on Ray. Need his leadership.

Agreed. He is our rock on perimeter defense. And while we'll get better through the year with some newer faces out there, we aren't there yet.

Yes, in the Sagarin Blog, I pointed out NM was rated #55 and would be the 3rd best team we faced so far. We did not shoot well and had many turnovers, but you have to give NM credit for that. We are also fortunate to have home team advantage and a slight favoritism by the refs.

Our pluses especially H&H were obvious. Moreover it was good to see Hill attacking more and I thought Edwards did a good job on offense in the middle of the zone. We also are doing a great job this year of beating the press. I have not seen anyone address this, because we are doing it with ease.

Our depth is outstanding and I would pay money to watch our scrimmages.

Not that I'm complaining but where did the refs favor us more than UM?

I would make a terrible ref, because my opinion is that 3 out of 4 fouls should be on them. However, in trying to be fair they committed 27 fouls and we committed 20. One can analyze that this is because of our bigs, but this is on par with home court advantage.

If we had to do another 5th year PG. Their PG Neal would thrive under Painter. That kid had some serious moves. Hopefully after the game painter was in his ear.

I thought we got a couple touch foul calls down the stretch in our favor, but I also thought the first half was called in NM favor so it evened out. One play Vince posted up and got fouled 3 times with no call and it ended up with a loose ball foul on us on the rebound. H&H also got hammered a few times down low early on with no call. If NM has any beef with the officials it's that they let stuff go early on and then called it late. Either way their bigs committed plenty of fouls. Neal wasn't getting any calls at the end either but I thought his drives were a little out of control thus no calls.

Baseball was the sport I knew best, but football was the sport I played best. Now older, I play a lot of basketball and volleyball. In pick up volleyball, I gave my honest opinion if a ball was in or out. Being a math major, I soon realized that 60% of the time I would honestly make the call in my favor, so to be fair I learned to shut up (most of the time). In league play, I realized that basketball is probably the hardest game to officiate. However, when the calls are made is important and at the end of the game is most crucial, so I agree with your assessment.

Good point on his drives being out of control. I hate it when refs bail out drivers that just throw themselves down as they are driving to the basket. It looks like a foul live but when you slow it down there is little to no contact by the defender. I thought the refs did a good job of not rewarding his late flops with foul calls.

I also hate it when they anticipate traveling on a big and let a guy like Neal take like six steps when caught in the lane with no where to go. They were just bad, but neither team got a huge advantage from the officials imho.

Would disagree w/ the OP. Purdue did not play like a B1G champion in this one was the reason it was close IMO. No disrespect to NM, but Purdue would have been beaten by a better team on this day..

Do you think New Mexico played their best game? I don't.

I do. I don't think they are that good.

I also don't think we were "lucky" to win this game. I think we should have given the ball to Haas and Hammons every time down the court, especially when we were like 4-50 from 3 (an exaggeration....but not really). Once we rode our Seabiscuits....we won.

Obviously we didn't play our best but we really missed Ray in this game. Obviously we missed him on D, but he's really our triple threat/slash option. We have plenty of inside guys, plenty of shooters but outside of Hill and Davis we don't have any slasher types and I don't think Hill really fits the bill there like Davis does.

Well I guess you can take that up with Painter because he seemed to think we were quite lucky that this was a home game and didn't think we would've won it anywhere else.

We won because Hammons took over and Hill and others stepped up and played good D and hit some FTs. Its that simple. I don't think much of it had to do with where we played....because we were clanging 3s early and late.

Like I said, you can argue with Painter on that one.

IMO New Mexico would beat out 3 Big Ten teams. They are a good team, but adjusted and they could not handle H&H. At the risk of singing the same song, I think we will be zoned tonight and we have been great at knocking down 3 pointers. However, this may be the perfect game to have H&H in the game together.

If a Big Ten team zones us and we are not hitting 3's, I think H&H together will disrupt things enough to get things going again.
