In 2011, Alabama didn't make the mock selection at 17-8, 9-2. They finished the regular season going 3-2, 3 wins at home including one over an NCAA team, and 2 losses on the road to an NCAA team and an NIT team. They didn't make the NCAA at 20-10, 12-4. Tennessee got in at 18-13, 8-8. Too many bad losses for Alabama and they didn't really add to their "body of work" in the last 5 games.

Purdue didn't make (was "under consideration") the Feb 13 mock selection, at 16-9, 8-4, before Nebraska. To improve their situation, they absolutely need to beat Nebraska (done) and Rutgers at home and win at least one of the road games over MSU, OSU or IU. If Purdue wins out at home and loses everything on the road, they really will not have added to their "body of work". But I believe they can lose to Illinois at home and it won't matter.

Seeding, however, is a different matter. If Purdue makes the field, I wouldn't be surprised to see them with a better than expected seed.
