NCAA First Round: Arkansas Little Rock v. Purdue Game Thread

Somehow I doubt he is telling the players to jack threes and NOT get it inside.
They have three guys surrounding AJ at all times. If we can't hit open 3s, we don't deserve to win.

I think we'll be fine. Someone will get hot from outside and will start freeing up the inside.

that's exactly right and a point i made on a post a moment ago......you are spot on

Painter did seem to indicate that 3's are the key. No reason to exploit that big size advantage when you have guys who can jack um up from the outside like we have! Coach says it, I believe it...

Man we played bad. 20 more minutes like this and we're going home. Lucky to be ahead.

Right. The entry pass needs to come from the top and should be from Vince or Dakota who are legit threats.

They have AJ frustrated. Hopefully we can get him engaged.

yeah....and several possessions, ALR had everyone in the paint. Ray hit one on the kick-out, but I do like DM and VE out top, and R Cline in the corner.

Hammons only looking to dish immediately since the all collapse so fast on him. That is fine, but perimeter guy needs to catch his pass AND THEN SEND IT RIGHT BACK INTO AJ!

Those are wide open 3's. Matt was right in his interview at halftime. Missing WIDE OPEN 3's. R Davis should be embarrassed about a couple of those 3's he missed. Those were practice 3's. I said it in an earlier post. If Purdue loses it's on the SENIORS. Matt can't walk out there and hit the 3's for them. The coach for Little Rock is doing exactly what he had to do. Pack it in and hope Purdue misses from 3pt range. That is the strategy against Purdue.

This...their game plan is simple, surround the middle and make us beat them from the perimeter. So far, it's working for them

Friends in Little Rock have called me, and say I shouldn't be surprised. They have gone to games all year and knew this would be tough for Purdue. We need to stop F-ing around and close this out hard.

So is that the key to beat us? Pack the inside and let our guards be lucky enough to make enough 3s. Seems like we are an easier out than I thought.

Little Rock is only in this game because we are allowing them to be. Its amazing how critical making three pointers is for this team. Our offense is based on our bigs but yet we still somehow live and die by the three.

They are packing it inside what do you want Purdue to do? You have to hit 3's and open up the inside. You saw what happened when it was forced inside. Missed shots or turnovers. It's simple but Purdue must execute hitting the 3's. That's a good defensive team. If Purdue forces the ball inside you will see more turnovers.

Agree. Even if you know nothing about basketball, LR strategy is easy to figure out: "we'll give you all the open 3s you want, and if you win by 30 because you hit a bunch that's ok, but we're not letting your bigs get 20 points each."

matt said at the half that it's not a matter of getting the ball underneath but more of we've got to hit our 3's in the 2nd half of the game. so in other words, we will keep shooting 3s, which I think is awesome because they are going to start going in.

Think so? They could be absolutely flat again this half. So, why not keep going to our strength? I'm not paid $2million before you make a snide comment. But, a passing team in football never won a game in football by totally changing and running it every play. We likely will lose with this approach unless the Bigs get more paint points and at least draw fouls by going up hard (minus Haas who will lose the ball)

I think DM and Cline will warm up in the 2nd half.

Uhhh...yeah...we win when we hit shots...lose when we dont. And need ball movement

It's also 7 TO's and giving up 7 offensive boards to ALR.

Doesn't matter, look at what Kansas is doing to APEAY. They play like champs. I used to desroy Self in the Paint crew when at Purdue but he's taken them up a notch since going to Lawrence. This is one weekend of entertainment, not two.

Pick and rolls, cutters/slashers, isolation one on one and many other options when we can't buy a 3 or feed to the block.
More than just two options to an offense, even ours.
We have no motion as mentioned earlier.

Thanks VE!!

sick of Ray Day's bad passes.

If I were a commentator, I would have my key(s) to the game: AJ plays well, Purdue wins. He isn't involved or plays poorly, Purdue loses.

That's pretty much it. Let's be very honest.
