Haven’t seen this here yet, but NCAA cleared payments of basically $6,000 for athletes for academic success. https://www.si.com/.amp/college/2022/04/06/ncaa-academic-bonus-21-schools-sec
The article says some schools may have to pay up to $6 million per year.
I recently spoke to friends in SEC athletic departments to ask how this would work. They said it’s a joke - the SEC schools participating have used “academic success” to mean “academically eligible” so any rostered athlete at those schools will get the full amount of basically $6,000. Some of these schools athletes already have the checks in hand.
As a note, the Big Ten often follows rules like this more conservatively. They might follow the SEC model, but history suggests they might set up actual success models for how much to give out.
One SEC friend said they have some athletes who can take home close to 25,000 bucks per year of legal money before NIL even enters the equation.
