Do we know anything about NC A&T?

I assume it's better competition than NW Ohio. Does anyone know what is expected of them this year?

I know NOTHING about this team other than I think they wee 9-23 last year, or something awful like that. A step up? Maybe. But our first REAL test will be against Old Dominion, who returns a bunch of people from last years successful team.

Vermont is going to be a decent test also. CBS has them at 113 in their preseason ranking of all 351 teams. I agree that Old Dominion will be the first team I worry about us slipping up to though.

Other than reserve big men Bryan Akinkugbe and Jerome Simmons, they return all of their regulars from last season, add two grad transfers in Joshea Singleton (Bucknell) and Ede Egharevba (Albany), and one true freshman in forward Deion James: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/stats/_/id/2448/north-carolina-aggies

CBS' Eye On College Basketball crew ranked them #305 out of 351:

"305. North Carolina A&T: The only agricultural and technical college in Division I will see a big jump this year (was 340 in KenPom last season). The Aggies lose no player of importance."

I know that we should be thankful that Friday is a home game for Purdue. I think we'd start the season 0-1 if we had to play in their house. This video is my reasoning...

They just lost to a Divison II team........at home

Men's Baskeball Knocks Off Division I Opponent in OT
GREENSBORO, NC- The Pfeiffer men's basketball team opened up their 2015-16 season on the road with an exhibition against Division I North Carolina A&T. The Falcons knocked off the Aggies 65-62 in overtime. Pfeiffer's defense, which finished last season ranked second in opponent field goal percentage, returned to form holding A&T to 21-for-81 from the floor and a staggering 22% from beyond the arc.

All I know is that no matter how badly you beat an rpi 300+ team, just playing them hurts your numbers come tournament time.

True. Can't blame Purdue for this one though. I think this is part of the Hall of Fame Tip Off thing we signed up for. They assign us two on-campus games and this was one of those.

Isn't there a connection between Taylor and A&T? Didn't his brother play there. Maybe he was recruited by them? Something.

It hurts your RPI, but the RPI is a garbage statistic that needs to be put to pasture. KenPom will not punish a team for beating a team by 40 if they were supposed to win by that much. And the committee is getting better about drawing on a larger array of stats and understanding which of them matter.

Beating a bottom barrel team certainly doesn't help the résumé, and if you play close or lose it could certainly hurt, but everybody from Duke to Rutgers has a few games like this on the schedule. We play in the Big Ten. We will have plenty of opportunities for signature wins. Don't sweat the numbers. Or if you do, pick a better set of numbers than the RPI.

You may be right about less emphasis on RPI, but there is an entire section on RPI in the official NCAA selection document, so they are certainly taking a decent amount of stock in it. Personally, I think any RPI/SOS calculations should be adjusted to account for a larger gap between top teams vs. bottom feeders (e.g., playing #1 and #300 is a tougher road to 2-0 than playing #150 and #151), but that's a different discussion..

Not that RPI is being phased out, but I agree it's not being used as the be-all-end-all measuring stick as in years past.

There's always going to be some cases for arguments, but the last few years, there's been enough information and metrics at hand. By and large, the NCAA selection committee has done a decent job picking who gets in the field. The "seeding" is getting better, but sometimes which Regional bracket is a lot harder to figure or justify.....JMHO that's where the other factors come in ($$$$$ hint, hint).

Since we/Purdue is nowhere near midseason form [& no team is now], are experimenting at our guard/starting guard positions [& other positions as well], & we have several new members to this team, I'm glad it's NC A&T, & not Vandy. I like the cupcakes early. This could also benifit us because, if we get up early [& we should/better] Coach Painter can experiment with different lineups, seeing how certin players play together, in an actual game. I realy like this opporotunity to find out how good our guards will be, work together [& how good our guard rotation & depth are], & the defense they bring, full court & all. There are surely going to be games later in the season, where our guards are going to have to step up their play, to match the talent, experience & aggressivenes of the superior opposing guards. Tonight could be a small primer to how good our guards can be. I'll be watching our guard play, above all else.

Go Boilers!!!
