Move student seats to make room for a team 'vomitory?'

Gag us.

That’s sickening for those of us who grew up -- and some who threw up -- in the student section that filled a third of Ross-Ade -- from all the seats behind the north goalposts, where freshmen held cards for Block P, all the way around to the seniors who threw game balls and dummies out of the stadium from above the 50.

Real-live Purdue students filled more than 20,000 out of the 69,000 capacity -- when football tickets were part of the student activity fee. Long before any fields of dreams, Purdue was following the adage of “Bill them, and they will come.” And we did, for winners and losers alike. It was the year’s best party times five.

Now we have a Domer planning to literally poke holes in Purdue tradition and also “square things” on a classic horseshoe that’s stood for 98 years -- the place that once held 71,629 already cut down to 57,236. Pathetic.

Truly want “life?” Give all the students their seats back. For a small fee, of course. And make that seat-eating team vomitory an actual tunnel.

The seat reduction was Burke. Why aren’t you blaming Morgan?

closing the stadium in was Morgan’s idea that he started, planned

Yet more half-truths from you.

Morgan Burke built/rebuilt the event facilities for every varsity sport and hired/rehired the all-time winningest coaches in Purdue’s history for football, basketball, volleyball, baseball and beyond, all while keeping operations in the black and receiving national recognition from his peers for doing so. With the complete rebuild of the press box into a six-story 120-yard pavilion in 2002, he reduced Ross-Ade seating only to accommodate premium club suites and to meet the future plans for major expansions of seating in the south end and the eventual upper deck. Student seating was never adversely impacted.

Now Mike Bobinski, who’s hired three underlings to help do the work Burke did alone, wants to further diminish the already reduced seating for students under scatter-shot plans yet to be set.

I’ll reserve my judgment until the renderings are released. Generally speaking, getting more seats closer to the field is a move in the right direction. Disproportionate number of seats in the north end zone with current design.

Who tore down the south end zone seats? That reduced seating 6400?

I know facts aren’t your strong suit

Anyone can read the facts I’d stated above. You really should try that, then try writing a tell-all. For a change.

Who removed the south seating … with announced plans for future seating expansions there? Who presided over the 2001-2003 redesign and renovations that expanded the main concourse and provided superstructure settings for an upper deck that would expand seating to 80,000? Who remade the press box into a six-story pavilion spanning beyond both end zones and a year-round money-maker?

Morgan Burke did far more for the success of Purdue athletics than anyone else ever has or ever will. Purdue will never see another quarter-century of such wide and lasting impacts on campus by one devoted alumnus, let alone any outsider with tunnel vision.

Now, who wants to split the student section and destroy seats they’ve had for 90 years?

Well, that is true for two reasons. George King was the worst AD ever to step foot on the face of the earth. He took a Rose Bowl football team and Final Four hoops team and ran both of them into the ground for 30 years.

Red Mackey signed off on football agreements in which we played six games at Ohio State, one in WL. Honest to God, look at this lunacy:

What did he do that ran them into the ground I’m just curious

Adapt or die.

Big Ten opponents will never bury Purdue, because we’ll have already taken care of that ourselves. Our immediate mission is to become cellar-dwellers. Literally.

We know the Purdue of today would never want to follow the lead of a team that actually goes out of its way to walk through its fans to enter its stadium, boarding buses and riding a couple blocks just to do so. We know just how bad that fanfare has been, so small-time they keep showing it over and over again on national telecasts. Who would ever want to be like … Clemson?

Ah, 1968 … when we was fab. No. 1 before going blank in “Goodbye, Columbus.”

A win or two over Ohio State does go a long way. Unless your name is Danny. Then you have to worry about the way you talk or fans want you fired.

This tunnel vision at least needs a fitting name. Bobo’s Basement. Purdue Sub-Global. The Deeper Dive. The Bottom Out. The Moles Hole. The Big Pig Dig. The Mentality Bunker. The Trench Underground. The Madhatter Project. The Fallout Shelter. The Stormin’ Sewer. The Sandwiched Subway. The Underground Railroad. (Wait, has that already been taken? Aw, chute.)

Just think of the potential for a film about it. Create a star like “The Gipper” Reagan and call it “Bedrock for Bobo.”

Standing underground is sure to make a big impression on recruits. What a view!

Its an improvement compared to walking through Mollenkopf, then a parking lot.

Your domer takes are interesting considering two of the better coaches in school history are former domers.

Clemson sets the proper example, going out of its way to walk through its fans. Far better than ditching students and digging to hide underground in …

Worm World. The Up-Down. The Vomit Comet. The Cold Mine. The Bat Cave. Shaft. The Great Escapade. The Grave Yard Shift. Road To Purdition. Hell Hall. The Last Pipeline. The Misled Silo. The Choo-Choo Chunnel. The Very Un-Well. The Bunny Hole. Rabbit Moraineville. Fox Burrow. The Maze and Blew Cheese. The Aunt Farm. The Fan Scram. The Athletic Department. Hole E. Cow.

The slap sign overhead: “Play like a chipmunk today.”

Speaking of Noble’s Dame turned Fools’ Gold Dome, there was the Notre Dame of Knute Rockne, George Gipp and the Four Horsemen, and then there’s the Notre Dame that quit playing Purdue in basketball, quit playing Purdue in football after five straight decades, rejected the whole Big Ten and relocated South Bend to the Atlantic Coast and then covered up its own 1800s murals of Columbus bringing Catholicism to the Americas. What’s next? Perish priests?

We don’t need no stinkin’ contrived catacombs.

You forgot about Phelan.

Regarding Clemson, our stadium has been so sparsely filled for the last 15 years that an attempt to copy that would look like shit. It would be as dumb as the 211 session that Hazell put in place.

Chickens may soon come home to roost. ND makes $15 M per year for NBC football plus about $8 M per year from the ACC for limited football + hoops. New Big Ten media rights is projecting $85 M per team plus about $ 17 M per year from the BTN.

They could auction off the naming rights, and get Harry's Chocolate Tunnel.

Purdue players in uniform have long been entering the stadium gate directly across from the Brees Center doors, walking through hundreds of applauding fans as well as the drum line, which blocks Wooden Drive as they pass. Point is, a superior program like Clemson sees the need to please fans enough that it uses buses and steep ramps for its entry ritual, while Purdue now seeks to avoid them, instead destroying seats to build a ridiculous tunnel that will only displace students.

Low and behold, a real transfer portal. A true vomitory.

Yep, I agree. How much better off would we be to (indirectly) spend that money on NIL for recruits. All U of Texas OL recruits are getting $50K each per year. And that's what we know about.

I’m sure the 100s of fans will be okay

I don’t get @Born Boiler ‘s nostalgia for things associated with middling results. Who gives a shit?

do you want to bring back the asphalt walkway and chain link fence around the field too?

So, you don’t give a shirt. Well, good for you. Sure not off your back, is it?

So, let’s spend millions to dig us a manhole. What an inspiring upgrade! Why didn’t we think of burying ourselves sooner? Cellar-dwellers, here we come!

How we ever gonna keep ’em down on the farm after they’ve seen our big dig?

At least our players won’t have to worry anymore about plainclothes paparazzi and 8-year-olds wanting to see them up close.

For factual results, below is Ross-Ade attendance since the first Rose Bowl season -- covering the years I’ve watched Purdue football. Note the attendance through the “middlin’” 1980s up to 1989, when students were first forced to buy tickets instead of having them paid by the standard activity fee. Average attendance dropped by 18,635 per game between seasons of 4-7 and 3-8. It sure wasn’t about that one more loss.

The big moral for newbies: Screw with the student section and screw yourself.

I think the tunnel will be extremely useful. The last few seasons have seen the sidelines turned into swamps on rainy game days. The tunnel will likely provide quicker drainage of the field.

I’m trying to figure out if you’re trolling or really do care that much how the football team enters the stadium.

I don’t think the tunnel will reduce the amount of students at games - just slightly displace maybe 5% them.

comparing Purdue’s current entry with Clemson is misguided - they’re nothing alike. Nebraska enters through a tunnel and makes a spectacle out of it.

The number one reason you should be for it is that apparently brohm wants it. He’s the man in charge and has to deal with the schlep all around the stadium.

it’s funny this topic brings out so much emotion in you.

I don’t get @Born Boiler ‘s nostalgia for things associated with middling results. Who gives a shit?

do you want to bring back the asphalt walkway and chain link fence around the field too?
For an Engineering school, Purdue does some of the most stupid things ever with respect to facilities, and, especially Ross-Ade.

The South End Zone has been a disaster for years....ever since deciding to remove the seats for that matter...compounded by the absolute idiocy of no plan to enter the actual stadium from it...genius idea...lets congregate a bunch of people, then, have no way for them to exit.

There is no need for a tunnel, and, it has nothing to do with adapting.

To BornBoiler's point...SO many schools make a conscious effort to walk as a team amongst fans as part of the gameday experience...Purdue does its absolute best to essentially avoid them at all costs, and, now, is going to displace them as a result of yet another design flaw...I guess there is the bonus that at least they don't funnel them through stupid ticket scanners.

Moving the student section seems dumb...again, to BornBoiler's point...just a scattershot idea...in fact, at this point, the entire thing seems to lack any real plan...aside of "build a tunnel...lose seats".

And, while the concourse and chain link fence may not have been aesthetically pleasing, the fact that there is only one way in and one way out remains stupid as well...yet another thing that was just done with no subsequent plan for the impact, and, literally nothing done since.

On the surface, I think "squaring off" the North End Zone sounds ridiculous...and, not sure that it would look good (or right even).

Seems to be the MO with this one. Like a dog with a bone.. a bone of obscure takes.

Stadium changes, Ivey being a lottery pick, Bell not being a 1st round pick just to name a few.

Let's wait for the renderings. Sounds like a lot of this is conceptual and the details still need to be worked out. Personally, I am glad that the updates are aimed at resolving some of the outdated aspects of Ross-Ade design and bring more fans closer to the action while improving the student-athlete experience. Breaking into a couple hundred seats (less than 0.5% of capacity) doesn't worry me much.

I'd prefer that Ross-Ade added a tent-roof using suspension dome technology. This technology allows for a roof to be added after the stadium structure is already built. This is the Olympic stadium roof in Munich, built over 50 years ago. It is both a suspension dome and a transparent tent-roof:

Behold, the blind leading the blind.

Proven unable to read or unable to grasp or unable to reason or all of the above. Yet they blather on with trite writes and insist others are acting on emotion.

What was his Ivey take?

There was a couple days of nonstop dumping on Jaden after the S16 game, with some saying his draft stock would take a big hit and that he needs to come back for another season.

Ill go to the source of the lunacy. Where do you think Ivey will get drafted?
