Most Disappointing Loss in Purdue History?

There have been many, including the infamous Orton fumble and the loss to Kansas State by the Lewis-Stephens-Mitchell led Boilers. Is this the most disappointing, or have Purdue fans become so used to this that none is worse than another.

No, I don't think this is in the ballpark of the Orton fumble game. That ruined the program. Purdue's going to be very good next year in basketball. I'd argue they have the best returning team in the conference, maybe Ohio State...

If this isn't the biggest, it's close. This was a Final4 talented team. One of the biggest teams in the country. And, again, Painter didn't take advantage of it. You can't assemble good talent and drop the ball and expect talent to keep coming. Painter blew it.....again.

They do not have the best returning class in the country. Look at MSU's recruiting class, IU will be good,

The national semifinal game against UCLA was worse. We fought back the entire game and had a chance to take the lead in the last minute, but JBC missed a short shot tha he usually hit. To make matters worse, UCLA later had to vacate that game. But, at least we beat Iowa in the last ever 3rd place game. (TIC)

This is bigger than the fumble.
Hummel's loss prevented us from finding out years ago that Painter teams collapse when the expectations and pressure rises.
That team may have been Final four capable, but we won't have gotten there. Unfortunately, Hummel got injured, and covered up Painter flaw.

Orton's fumble was one of the most perplexing moments in sports history for NCAA football I have ever seen but that doesn't even come close to this loss. This was absolutely inexcusable. The only way Purdue loses this game is by not trying at all and walking through the motions so they can be home later on to get fat and eat Pizza tonight. Winners don't act like that. It is a personality issue on this team and that starts with the coach. BK from IU would have brought hell upon IU for a loss like this and should have. It is the epicenter of the failure of America right now to have a team go out there like this and play like that to an inferior team like that and disrespect the game. You want to know what is wrong with America right now watch this Purdue game. It wasn't just a choke it was worse than throwing darts. Carless and without pride and principle. Purdue flat out disrespected the game tonight and went out like fools and cowards tonight. That is shameful. This is lesson in life for everyone to never take anything for granted because that is the equivalent of suicide. And that is what Purdue committed tonight. Basketball suicide and that is disgusting. We need to fire this coach and bring someone with a very fiery personality to this school who A) can recruit and B) understands the game. This is a must have to put and end to this kind of crap. This isn't what 2 million dollars a year buys I am sorry. This is flat out irresponsible and a lot was on the line tonight for Painter to come in there and get embarrassed. It was like watching a Ferrari lose to a g-d damn trailer. It should never happen. That is the driver's fault and it is time for this driver to go. You don't get 2 million a year for this letting down your school like this. Absolutely unforgivable.

Pretty close. I didn't expect perfection or even a FF. The way we lost is what hurts. We didn;t hardly even look to score the last 2:30

We won't be any better next year. 20-9 or something. 4th/5th place, maybe win one tourney game.

NOt even close to Final 4 team,,,no guards and no defense against a very mediocre team. Too bad our team got out coached too

Didn't say anything about best in the country. I specifically said "returning class in the conference." What Purdue has coming back is better than what MSU has coming back, IU, pretty much everyone except maybe Ohio State.

Now, you add in the recruits, which is a crapshoot, yeah, Purdue's probably not the best team in the conference. Good thing I never made that point, now did I?

Oh no doubt they quit. They got smacked in the face by a team half their size and didn't know how to respond so they went home to mommy out there. No question. I totally agree with you. The way they played that overtime was an embarrassment to sports. No way Painter should be brought back to answer for this. He knew what was on the line tonight after the entire Big Ten got absolutely humiliated on that selection Sunday. Absolutely disrespect humiliated. He had his team scared, crybaby attitude, wimpy faced. They should have been like hungry dogs looking to go on a rampage tonight. I mean absolutely profound.

This is spot on. We will be good again, but Hammons will not be replaced, even remotely, and we won't get out of the opening weekend, unless Painter adds an impact player this spring.

He has a point dcsparty. He never even mentioned recruiting. Just "returning team". Incoming frosh aren't returning.

I just don't get where the hell is the anger out there? When I played football I would literally kill people out there on the field and that was how I was taught to play the game from day 1. I wasn't scared and timid. I was just waiting for every single second looking for an opportunity to knock somebody's head off. To win at all costs. What is going on here? Don't these kids want to win anymore? What is the matter with their minds? Fight already. This isn't a lifetime opportunity this is a one time opportunity and you blew it. It is symbolic. It is the attitude. This has to stop. We need a coach who sets a high standard and we need it now. Someone who says look people here is the goal and you are going to reach this goal or you are going to pay in the offseason. If you come here you come here to win every second of the way from academics to sports 100 percent. If you don't like it get your a-s out of here now and leave. Period. This nonchalant crap attitude being taught at schools is setting a really bad vibe in this country and that was what was displayed today. The world doesn't work that way. I hope they learned that lesson today for the rest of their lives because believe me when they are out of sports they're going to think back to this moment in their lives begging to be back out there to have a second chance.

There's just to many disappointing losses to be able to compare. I would say vs. Texas, because I was there and that sucked big time. However, vs Kansas State when Stephens dribbled it out of bounds was a crushing defeat too..

80 at market square arena, horrific loss. OSU loss deep into the tourney with big dog and a few others sting like this but this one has to be the worst as far as this being a "deep run" team construct. So I'm putting this at the very top, you could see it in the post game Purdue locker room, that was friggin' brutal.

To me it is just not good enough. You see with these NC games how you get fool's gold. 13-1 or whatever doesn't mean squat. I would be happy if they went through a season without losing a game they have no business losing; at home to a directional team, at Illinois, any game with a 14 point or larger 2nd half lead.

Anybody that was surprised at this flop only needs to look back to the January loss to Iowa at Mackey. Or last years flop to Cincinnati. Or......there's been so many! I'll always be a Purdue fan, because I think it is a school where the primary focus is still an education, but the sports teams just don't seem to have heart anymore.

I would say the 1994 loss to Duke. If Glenn's back had not gotten hurt after the Kansas game, we would have won that game with a healthy Glenn and probably the National Championship that year. That Purdue team was tournament ready and Glenn was the best player in the country.

How long have you been a Purdue fan? A #5 seed losing isn't a shock to anyone.

Purdue's had much better teams/seeding over the years.

And aside from that, it's not even about losing to a worse team. When we lost to Wisconsin out in Arizona - that was a heartbreaking game. Cardinal's senior year for a trip to the Final Four for Keady. That was 10 times more painful than yesterday.

To act like Purdue is the only school that has disappointing/heartbreaking tournament losses is ignorant. 1/2 the field ends the tournament in the first round - not just Purdue. We just happened to have 2 tough ones in a row. Painter has been to 9 NCAA Tournaments and 7/9 we have gone past the first round. We actually had the longest streak of winning in the first round in the country for a few years.

Yes, this will have an impact on recruiting.

The football game most like yesterday was losing the Outback Bowl to Georgia With Drew Bree's at the helm. We were up like 25-0 and lost the game in the 4Q 28-25. The Orton fumble was much more devastating
