We can’t sign the big money stud that the Yankees and Dodgers are locked in a bidding war over, so we have to sign the cheap, dumpy looking catcher with a high on base percentage.

Was the dumpy catcher Jason Giambi? He became an Indian when he was geriatric lol (Indians/Guardians fan here).
No Giambi was the high dollar free agent signing with the Yankees, so Billy was trying to replace his production by looking at prospects that most teams overlooked, because they didn’t look the part.
Of course, Billy had been the stud “look the part” prospect himself a few decade’s earlier.
Bo Diaz, Ray Fosse, or Dave Duncan.
