Aug. 3 -- “Long story short, a non-conference loss for the Tigers in 2017 is inexcusable. Period.”

July 4 -- “When the SEC required that teams schedule at least one power conference opponent outside of league play, Mizzou found a perfect foil in Purdue, a Big Ten team that’s fallen on hard times but still fulfills the scheduling mandate. Other than perhaps Rutgers or Kansas the Tigers couldn’t have found a less imposing opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or Pac-12.”

Aug. 25 -- “Then there is Purdue, ranked 96th by ESPN, 89th by Sports on Earth and 84th by Athlon. New coach Jeff Brohm brings an ambitious offense to West Lafayette, but Year 1 could be rough after the program's brutal 9-39 stretch.”

Apparently those folks in the Show-Me State will have no excuses for their perfect foil. Time to give them some.

While they did write this stuff earlier this summer when it still made sense it could still be bulletin board material now.

If it motivates our players so be it but I can't exactly say that fans here thought differently before the season. I have slightly higher hopes than I did a few weeks ago but I still expect Missouri to win. Would be thrilled to be proven wrong.

I don't think Brohm needs a lot of fodder to find something motivational for his players to maintain focus and play hard....but I think any coach would take something like this and use it in some fashion. With the new locker room, I'd put these quotes on the tv's and such every day before practice.

with the right Captains and leaders on the team , motivation will be there, so important who the team leaders are

People also did that with Hope, and Tiller towards the end. It's a vicious cycle.

I do recall people getting pissy when Hope swept the I's on the schedule to get to a bowl his last year. But I think the decision has already been made at that point

Yep...esp before the Illinois and Maryland games.

You hate to root for a loss because of the players, but if the staff is wasting their talents what do you do?
I kinda felt like I was watching my dog die...hope for the best, but you know ya gotta end it

Well, it took one extra day before the excuses started coming from the same St. Louis columnist who’d said Missouri losing to Purdue -- which he’d grouped alongside Idaho, UConn and Mo State -- would be “inexcusable. Period.”

His excuse? The Tigers “quit.” Oh, so that explains it. Except, aren’t quitters supposed to give up even more points after they’ve quit, instead of none through the last 27 minutes? Oh well. At least now we have a little more insight as to why they’ve lost not one but two NFL teams from there in the last 30 years.

They didn't give up more points because Brohm took his foot off the gas of the offense. He even said he went really conservative and vanilla in the second half. But that team did quit because Purdue made them quit.

Letting up and quitting are different worlds. If they'd truly quit, even vanilla would've scored until Sunday.

Can't blame him for thinking in early August that losing to us at home was inexcusable. I don't think he would have written the same in the week leading up to the game.

I can blame ANYONE who classifies Purdue with Idaho, UConn and Missouri State ANYTIME, and especially when talking about a Missouri football program that had exactly one more win than Purdue in the previous year.

INEXCUSABLE??? Get real. Maybe for a handful of losers on this board whose frame of reference goes all of four years.

And, on the morning of the game, a day that saw two of ESPN's GameDay quartet (Rece and Kirk) verbally sparring on air over who had picked Purdue first as "SuperDog of the Day," the Mizzou beat writer still said they'd win 31-27. Just missed it by that much, didn't they?

Missouri = 2013 Purdue. You have to give them more time to get through all the stages of grief. Some are still in denial, just like we were. Remember the "bare cupboard" and "complete rebuild" and "one brick higher" and all the other nonsense from 2013?

Whatever your frame of reference is, the last few years are all anyone had to go on before the season started. And we have been putrid and largely not even competitive against power 5 schools.
But if you wanna be mad on the internet, I'm not gonna stop you.

The last few years are all anyone had to go on? How about the last nine MONTHS?

A proven bright new coach settles in with his whole new staff while getting a new state-of-the-art team facility and sets a roster boasting veterans and depth at the most vital positions, joined by several proven talented newcomers freshly imported from other schools … only a fool would expect the status quo, unless that alleged observer is blind to common knowledge and/or dense to common sense and insists on sticking to convictions that the holdovers from a 3-9 team would be utterly overwhelmed by a 4-8 team that hadn’t changed so much as its underwear.

Go ahead and show your pride in being grouped with Idaho and Missouri State, while I’ll go ahead and point to the scoreboard.

Try not giving a (poop) what one guy in Missouri thinks about our football team. Your life will be better.

The Pulitzer newspaper staff’s obvious shortcomings in research and collective absence of insight are laughable, after having been somewhat motivational, evident by the general reaction to this post. However, we are concerned about your individual lack of community appreciation and lingering sense of defeatism, which can and does impact others. In other words, we’re schoolin’ you, son. Now get better soon, because you’re really missing the boat, not to mention the train.
