Milton Wright gone

Here's to Tracy being Bell 2.0!
Tracy was llikely our starter in the slot anyhow. This is a pretty big blow. Downgrading us to 9 wins based on the fact we now have to rely on guys who have never been healthy here! (Even though I think they are very talented)

The WR position still has lots of guys who can play. TE has some good players. RB might be upgraded, but it’s hard to tell. OL is still about the same. The defense should be decent and about the same as last year. If our QB stays healthy we should have a good year.

I wonder what Wright will do next. I think an NFL team might take a flyer on him in a supplemental draft, depending on what his 40 time is.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s slightly faster in a 40 than Bell. Maybe in the high 4.5 range. He isn’t the player Bell is but might be a 6/7 rounder.

I doubt any team gives up a draft pick in the supplemental draft to acquire him. there were many starting players that went undrafted. the Wr from nebraska who led the BIG 10 in yards per catch and also had speed was a 7th round pick by the packers. the starting running backs for Iowa and oregon St went undrafted. the guy from oregon st supposedly led the pac 12 in rushing. the packers also signed the starting WR from UW as an "undrafted" FA.

it seems very odd with today's online schools, that he can't find one and transfer the credits. I know purdue accepted credits of courses I took at Weber St. and UTSA and USF accepted courses i completed at a couple of junior colleges and night school diploma mills where you pay money and they give you a B. Surely Phoenix university has the course (s) he needs and he could finish them before July. Arizona recently accepted the basketball player from John A Logan Junior College who had previously attended classes at UMASS and Bradley.

Really disappointing, I thought he would get his act together this Spring. Best of luck to him.
Agree. I just hope everything’s ok in his world and his life. Such a lost opportunity.

IIRC he graduated from CAL (Christian Academy of Louisville, ergo good academics), has a stable family situation, etc. all of which would indicate solid life foundation….. but things can unravel when one leaves for college - as I know from personal experience (😎) which thankfully got turned around quickly.

Regardless, I wish the young man well - hope he gets things figured out. Will miss him.

They don’t draft based on stats, nfl potential. And he has it. The bears drafted a defensive player who wasn’t even a starter at a MAC school.

Robinson was a situational starter at Miami of Ohio last year. he was a converted WR > TE > edge and was a 5th round pick. Fast defensive linemen are big in demand. and speaking of the Bears, how have they done lately? I see they drafted an awesome QB.

Speaking of potential and comparing apples to apples, Rutgers WR Melton was a 7th round pick. His season performance was better than Wright's, and he ran a 4.34 40 ! Nebraska's WR Toure was a 7th round pick with 4.40 speed. and he was the BIG 10's leading yards per catch receiver and was also an awesome return man. . If Melton and Toure were 7th round picks, what would that make Wright?

Yancy was fast and was also a 7th round pick and lasted 2 years on the practice squad.

I'll stick to my assessment that no NFL team is going to use a supplemental pick to draft Wright. he may sign on with somebody as an undrafted FA.

Not sure if anyone would use a supplemental pick but it’s not because he didn’t have good stats. He went through a period of the dropsies but When he was locked in he looked better than any of those players you mentioned. Why even have a combine if teams are going to look at college production?

also wr was in strong demand just like fast defensive linemen. Robinson had 37 career tackles at a mac school over 4 years. His college production was not good and bears still used a 5th round pick on him. Why can’t you just acknowledge true statements instead of grasping at stalls trying to pick them apart.

Also if you look at big ten games wright probably has Toure beat. Toure got a bunch of yards against fordham and Buffalo. Wright had 6 TDs in big ten play and Toure had 3. Toure may be faster but wrights going to look better going up against big physical NFL CBS.

4.4s if not better
Wow! I didn’t think he was that fast but I’ll defer to you on that one. Good athlete for sure. I hope he gets it together and gets an opportunity to play professionally somewhere. We could have used him.

When he was coming in GBI iirc was saying sub 4.4. That’s why this stings so bad. Purdue has GOOD replacements. They don’t have replacements who got offers from alabama because they are physical freaks relative to the other guys.

where our group is going to be next year is the first time we don’t have David bell or rondale moore in 5 years. Milton Wright could have been that kind of matchup problem.. or much much closer to it than anyone we have remaining. No one else we have likely will be on day one.

Tells ya all you need to know about the Bears.

I’m sure that was TIC, Not just the bears. Heck antonio gates never touched a football until he tried out for the chargers after he didn’t get a look from nba and immediately was signed.

Read this last night. But still can't get past this. How in the hell did this happen?

I'm guessing he either thought he'd be back this year or is willing to sit out a year and come back next. If not shouldnt he have declared for the 2022 draft?

Yeah I see a 4.48 or something like that. Guy can run. Sucks he’s shit in the classroom. Ruined a potential NFL career!
If he can run in the 4.4s at 6’-4”, he’ll get drafted. Then he can have an NFL career, assuming he can consistently hold onto the ball.

Good post. I was wondering the same, i.e. how does that happen. I knew athletes in college who came from an academic background that really didn't prepare them to succeed, but that doesn't look like it's the case here.

Interestingly, it looks like his high schools is in the news for assigning students a writing assignment with the theme of 'talk a friend out of being gay'. So there's that.

His dad does extremely well.

Portal transfer window is May 1st. Only a D2 or D3 can come in now and play right away.
If I were Purdue, I’d hunt for that D2 or D3 All-American hungry for a chance.
A couple of injuries could make our WR Corp very inexperienced.
Our T.E.’s may be our strongest receiving strength now.

1) we’ve recruited well at wr. Next man up
2) they had a transfer from ut on campus

My understanding is that someone can join the team from the portal and play right away now. They just can’t enter the portal after may 1st and still be eligible this season.

Also hope for a Grad transfer that wants to make a name for himself draft day...narrow scope and chances.
We'll see what develops.

Damn, sociology is like a step below undeclared in terms of challenging majors to boot.
I did see one poor fellow who thought MW’s major was ”Socialism”, rather than”Sociology”. This is the same rube who picked Indinia to win the Big ten championship and make the BCS last year, so cutting him some slack is appropriate. But still . . . Hope he understands what 44-7 means. Reese Taylor sure did.

To both of your points:
1) Agree. However, with rash of injuries and surgeries, who is that next man? My list might be wrong as I scrolled thru roster. Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen, TJ Sheffield, Mershawn Rice, Broc Thompson all had injuries and surgeries. Most all will be back, but you never know how ready will they be or for that matter, will they ever be as effective? Will it take these 4 players combined to make 1 healthy WR throughout the season? Hard to tell.
I know of Tryone Tracy being the new playmaker and good reviews of Deion Burks. Any news on Elijah Canion, Preston Terrell, Zion Steptoe? Could a fast T.E. become a combo G. Miller or P. Piferi?

2) Portal Transfer crapshoot. If he wasn't happy on UT roster, can he crack our lineup. Crapshoot IMHO. Any grad transfers sniffing around?

I havent heard much on Canion. Terrell turned heads.Sullivan also showed he could play in the bowl game. As for TE, Piferi is the fast TE.
