Kansas is talking to Les Miles about taking over as head coach at the end of the year. This kind of makes you wonder if he wasn't hired in the past because other schools didn't want him? Or he priced himself too high? Or if he turned down the school offers waiting for the right offer?

Yes. Yes. No.

No one wanted him.

Kansas is one of the worst jobs in the power 5. Maybe only iu is worse

No one that knew what they were talking about

This. He won a NC with Saban's players. Ran an archaic offense and the still have not recovered on that side of the ball.

At his age, would not have been able to recruit the players needed to run his D system and would have never attracted a DC here even the level of Holt....not to mention that Dave Aranda, probably the best DC in the country wasn't going to come walking through the door here.

Miles would have been an unmitigated disaster.

Head coaching record
Overall
141–55
Bowls 8–6
Accomplishments and honors
Championships

1 National (2007)
2 SEC (2007, 2011)
3 SEC Western Division (2005, 2007, 2011)

At the time, I was a fan of Les Miles because Hazell was that much of a disaster as HC. Don't get me wrong, his style is not Purdue's style of cradle of QB's and throwing the ball around akin to Tiller era. His record above speaks significantly different than an "unmitigated disaster" as he was winning at 71.9%! He was a winner by having a great defense along with very good RB's and OL that could block & move the ball.
KU might be a disaster if he can't pull together his entire staff the way he wants quickly & efficiently. He'd likely elevate them to better relevance than where they are now. The question I have is how much zest does he have at age 64 and for the next 4 years to see his recruits come thru?

He had an almost identical record that Akers had before coming to Purdue.

I honestly felt Akers was a great hire. Unfortunately it didn't work out. I also liked the Jim Young hire. Unfortunately he didn't stay. I also liked the Rose hire. Unfortunately he didn't stay.

His offenses were unmitigated disasters and that is why he was fired.

If youre purdue, you dont try to beat the big boys by playing the game their way. You beat them with innovative schemes. That aint Les Miles.

IU SUCKS!!!

However, I think Rutgers is a worse job than IU, and it's not really that close in comparison. Kansas and Rutgers may compete for the bottom 5 football job/programs out of all conferences (not just the Power 5).

IU has more losses than any other college football program. No power 5 team has a worse winning percentage.

Good point. Historical statistics are powerful.

But looking at the current state of apathy at these programs, in November of 2018, I would have Rutgers, Kansas, etc at the absolute bottom of a list of potential programs, if I was a coach.

Rutgers has a screwed up Athletic Dept and has for years. It's not just the FB team. The BB team has been bad as well.

My wife is a Rutgers graduate (both undergrad and graduate.) The area in which they recruit is fertile, so they should be better than IU. The problem is that they had a moderate success under Schiano, but they wanted more quickly. He decamped and it has been downhill ever since.

They need to use the B1G money to improve facilities and commit to a coaching staff in both revenue sports. The problem is that they do not have the backing of the University Admin to do so. (Think Purdue under Cordova.)

I would say there is a proven history of success at Rutgers at a much higher level than what IU has been able to show. I'm not sure a single good hire could turn IU around...it would likely take 2-3 consecutive good hires as shown by what the good hire of Wilson did and then promptly hiring Allen has done as well.

New Jersey turns out a number of good players. The problem for Rutgers is that in football they go to PSU and Michigan and in basketball they go to Duke and Villanova. The NJ recruiting footprint includes NYC and Philadelphia. The problem is that do not get the top players from either.

Meyer has been raiding NJ too. Odd to see OSU get traction there.

You might want to add Wisconsin (Ron Dayne, Corey Clement & Jonathan Taylor) are all top RB's that Wiscy dips into their state to pick up every now and then.

I don't disagree with you in that his style became stale. I will stand by his record and say he could win games. Even if they were ugly, he could win games. If I recall correctly, he went on a job hunting tour the year he was let go and promised to hire an O.C. that would run the spread offense to create some buzz. If must have fizzled as there were no takers and his price tag must have been too high.
