Frankie, you are right on about UM qb. Just brutal. Was at the UM/IU game.
While the intent of the targeting rule is good, The way it's being called and interpreted is terribly flawed. O'Korn got flushed, starts running. The defender, in this case Scales, already running at him, dropping his hips, set to make hit. O'Korn sees this, takes a VERY LATE slide. Scales Gets a personal foul, luckily no targeting.
WTF do these refs and rules-makers expect a defender to do right there? He can't stop even if he didn't launch. And I don't think when they made the rule, they accounted for qb's or other ball carriers making it a strategy (as it has become) to just run toward the defender, then at the last second slide late, thus changing the angle of the hit, to get the personal foul and possibly the targeting.
I think most know what legit targeting looks like. It would be nice if the refs would Have some common sense when calling it.
Oh, and BNG013, yes, agreed. Terrible PI call on Fant too. UM DBs get away with more on EVERY play without being called than what happened there.
