His first start might have been the greatest first start in the history of college football. That said he never came close to that success again, he got worse with every start.
His first start was against Illinois 20-21 with 5 TDs 0 ints

mertz has some awesome games that gain his coach's trust. but he usually follows those games up with some gawd aweful games that make his coaches pull their hair out. there is zero consistancy to his game. Look what he did after his good game against Purdue.
