Not sure I will get a full story out tonight due to magazine conflicts, but I just spoke with Montreal defensive end Mathieu Betts about his official visit to Purdue this weekend and the deal is Purdue should know by Wednesday whether he'll commit there.

Purdue has offered him after Marcus Freeman and Taver Johnson have each been to see him in Canada, but this weekend, Darrell Hazell asked him for a decision by Wednesday, I suppose because Purdue has to deal in knowns right now at defensive end with signing day upcoming.

Betts is a 6-4, 245-pound pass-rusher who recorded 15 sacks this past season.

His recruitment is an interesting one, because he's not just deciding what school to play college football, but what country to play college football in. Currently, he's committed - or has a spot reserved - at one of the top college programs in Canada, but says the U.S. is a higher level of football and he's exploring it.

Purdue is the only school he has visited, but Temple and Buffalo have offered him as well, as well as some others. But if he is to take a second official visit next weekend, he says that would close the Purdue door because of its imposed deadline.

The guess here is he will take it. The way he talked about Purdue seemed like more a "when" and not "if" tone.

Defensive end is a chaotic fray for Purdue right now.

Purdue's lone high school D-end commitment is Chazmyn Turner, who has fielded some other interest from some big schools and could be an 11th-hour flight risk, though this is significant: According to our stool-pigeons in Blacksburgh, Virginia Tech will not be an option for Turner. West Virginia, however, may be.

Purdue has already lost Twazanga Mugala.

(Purdue does have a commitment from JUCO Shayne Henley.)

FYI: Tim Faison will play strong-side linebacker at Purdue, he said.

The "deadline" on Betts almost certainly has everything to do with Purdue needing to know where it stands at his position heading into next weekend, in which it'll bring in some final recruits on the final weekend prior to signing day.
