Mathias

He's the guy who needs to be the go to guy for sure. Didn't do first game against Nova but upperclassman and needs start off games better. CE could be go to guy next season but Frosh and this is Dakota time.
Buried a huge 3 late against AKST thought was game winner but know what happen after. VE is critical for this team but no doubt this is Biggie and Dakota's team. Mathias is pure magic from corners.

Kudos to Dakota, he played great today! If he can be on every game - I think we might be alright!

He had a costly TO in the final minute (along with Swanigan) but other than that, he played pretty well. Maybe he would have made the final shot if Nebraska hadn't seen the film of that exact same play on the final possession of the Purdue loss at Iowa.

Mathias has played well the last two games (i.e.: 7 rebounds vs. MSU was more than I expected from him). However, like most of the team, I want to be able to see him make plays to win close games. There's not a lot of players on the team that seem to have a "clutch gene" (maybe Carsen if given the opportunity), but that might be partially tied to how confident in his players and composed CMP seems to be (or not be) in those situations.

I think that Mathias and PJ Thompson have both been very solid this season. There are few players in the country who get more from their talent level than those two.

I agree that they're solid.

Your second comment: you could say the same thing about the players putting up the best numbers on the best or better teams in college basketball. It's very subjective.

Of course, it's subjective.

Still, PJ is an example of a player who didn't receive a high major scholarship offer until the Spring of his senior year. It's easy to see that he lacks length and the athleticism to make up for it. Yet, he continues to put up outstanding efficiency numbers and he does a surprisingly good job on the defensive end, given his limitations.

Mathias was more highly recruited, but similar things could be said about him. He has limited length and athleticism, but he is arguably the best defender on the team and offensively, he is more impressive than even his solid numbers would imply.

I don't disagree that there are other players throughout college basketball that you could make similar arguments for, including Swanigan, but they are the exception and not the rule.

I was really surprised that Painter didn't put Mathias on McVeigh late in the first half against Nebraska when it was painfully obvious that Cline couldn't stay with him.

I don't remember, maybe Mathias was in foul trouble. But I have to think he would have made that barrage of three balls much more difficult for McVeigh than Cline did.

Dakota is having a really solid season in all respects and doesn't get the credit he deserves. Would love to see DM, PJ and RC on the perimeter for a last second shot with CE at point and Biggie down low. Let CE try to break down the defense and dish to perimeter shooters or Biggie if he is open. I know CE is somewhat of a question at point, but I am only speaking about a one possession situation.
