Maryland gets TT verbal.

It was very interesting to read in his announcement that Maryland made a late rush to get this commitment and also mentioned that Under Armour a huge benefactor to Maryland also sponsored his AAU Team! Makes one wonder!!!!

not sure i'd like it, but it wouldn't surprise me if UA eventually became a conference/big ten sponsor (at least for all football, bball)

Being in the area, Under Armour/Maryland is a junior Oregon/Nike. There are some big differences.

First off, Maryland's financial situation is still not good from what I hear.

They are very far behind in many aspects, including facilities. Maryland does not have an indoor practice facility - for any sport, including football. There is a project recently announced with a big donation from Kevin Plank (UA CEO).

The athletic department is essentially borrowing I believe $25 million from the university in order to start this project sooner than later - that they will repay with Big Ten revenue later on. This is how desperate/financially strapped they are.

The same thing happened with their previous AD - when they named Comcast Center, she spent the money all up front instead of having a steady revenue from the naming rights for the entire deal.

They also have struggled with ticket sales, specifically for football. They built a huge press box with suites that they cannot sell and are killing them financially. They have always struggled to have a big football fan base and rarely sell out their stadium.

Also, what I've heard is that all of the uniforms that Maryland has been pumping out have not been free for them, but they've paid UA for them.

So basically, Maryland is trying to act like Oregon, but in doing so is doing it while being incredibly strapped for cash. They're the middle class people who want to act like they are upper-class and have maxed out credit cards, lease fancy cars, etc. to appear as such.

If PG Melo Trimble leaves, it will even things out with them. They are already losing four of their regulars (highlighted by Dez Wells). They should have a pretty good frontcourt though, with combo forward Jake Layman, and bigs Damonte Dodd, Michal Cekovsky, Georgia Tech transfer Robert Carter, and Diamond Stone.

That must make practicing basketball pretty miserable in those cold winter days in Maryland! No wonder they transitioned to the physicality of the B1G really well this season!
