Purdue is coming off a disappointing and decisive loss at Marquette on Tuesday, 76-58. The loss also ended Purdue's 39-game non-conference win streak. In that game, Purdue struggled handling Marquette's defensive pressure and made several mistakes, leading to 15 turnovers and numerous transition opportunities for the Golden Eagles. The Boilers also could not convert enough on the good opportunities they did have.
The
Marshall Thundering Herd are seeking a third straight win. Marshall has just one defeat occurring in the second game of the season in a 90-80 blemish against a good Toledo squad. They have replied by defeating Southern Indiana along with a 83-62 home win against Bellarmine. Nate Martin is having a great start to the season. The senior guard has scored at least 15 points in all four games, including 23 points in the recent win. Martin has delivered an average of 18.3 PPG and 8.3 RPG. Dezayne Mingo scored 19 points in the win against Southern Indiana. The junior guard has provided an average of 12 PPG on 50% shooting. Jalen Speer netted 20 points in the win earlier this week. The senior guard is posting an average of 10 PPG. Makal Dawson has shot 40% or below in three of four clashes. The senior guard has registered 6 PPG.
Marshall is ranked 165th in DI in the KenPom ratings, 193rd offensively and 150th defensively. They play at a much faster tempo than Purdue, rated 91st to Purdue's 309, well down the list and with the last sixth of teams with the slower paces in all of D1 basketball.
Look for Purdue to continue to heavily rely upon Trey Kaufman-Renn, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith for scoring. TKR leads the Boilers in scoring and rebounding with averages of 17.6 and 6.6, respectively. Fletcher Loyer is averaging a second-best 16.2 points per game, and Braden Smith is next at 14.6. Braden Smith needs to be more efficient with his shooting, and last game had some costly turnovers. He is the floor general for the team without question and is tied for 2nd in the nation with 9.4 assists per game. Purdue still needs consistent production from a group of other players and has to push the defensive learning curve. Purdue has slipped to 20th in the KenPom ratings, and it's primarily through the defense, now at 61st. They are still a top-10 rated offense at 8th.....and for now, that's where they'll have the edge on most teams.
This game could be very competitive, although a return to the home environment should help the Purdue newcomers.
Some thoughts from Matt Painter are fairly telling:
"
Our first three games, we weren't lights out. (Then) we played really well against Alabama. We weren't great before that. So we're trying to find ourselves, trying to find some consistency. But this is what you want. Because we get thrown into (Big Ten play) at Penn State and Maryland in December. You want to be able to get off to a good start in the league; that's a little easier said than done. I just believe if you've got a good enough team, you need to go out and get challenged, even if you've got to take a couple on the chin."
"
That way, when you get into the NCAA Tournament, you've done everything in your power as a coach to help."
"
We need to start by taking care of the basketball. One of the things that probably jumps out for us is I don't think we're as good as Marquette defensively. So, in practice, we don't see that. Doesn't mean we don't have athletic players, doesn't mean we don't have good players. But they have a more experienced defensive group. So we've got to grow at taking care of the basketball."
How do the Boilers respond this afternoon? We shall see, starting in a little over an hour or so.
Boiler up, my friends.
