Why wasn't Freeman asked to be outright DC?? From what I know he would have been perfect. He is vocal, respected, and demands alot etc. Compared to Els which I know little about other than:

Purdue hired a guy that was a high school coach last season and was defensive coordinator at New Mexico State (one of the worst FBS level programs in America and hasn't been to a bowl since 1960).

So not sure experience should be a factor here. Did Freeman accept the Co D coord. role?? I hope so. And if not, I hope we don't lose him. Sounds like a upc and coming guy that will eventually do great things...

Els keeps things simply DH said...well that makes me scared bc everything we did was simple in my mind. So simple that we were the most predicatbele team in the B10 IMO. Heck, we even abandon or couldn't run an uptempo offense that apparently we put in place in the off season...I never saw it at least??

I'll try not to judge too much, and I will surely give someone new a chance...just not sure Freeman wasn't the guy is all.

Hell, if we waited we could have had a shot at John Jancek who just got let go by Tenn.

Freeman has no experience. I would bet the co- tag is to keep him from bolting for another job. Els will make the calls.

Agreed, but how much does this other guy?? I hope he doesn't bolt bc he may be our best coach all things considered..between him leaving or Els limited experience I say keep Freeman...otherwise hire someone else that has a proven track recorded at the DC position.

Do we really care if a member of a 6-30 staff leaves
If he is a good coach absolutely. He is not he reason for our record I can assure you...watch Where the guy is in 10 years...he will be at a major school as a HC.

Got a text today from a good friend who is a lifelong NB fan. His son played LB and special teams there a few years ago and was the Gatorade HS player of the year in NB. Did not endorse the new hire at all. His exact words were "not sure what your coach was thinking".

Hard to hire when people think you are a lame duck

He won't be here in a year anyway, so not too concerned either way.

Going 6-30 will hurt his career trajectory. He will need to go to another lower-middle pack P5/job or a high-level MAC to have some success as a position coach. 2-5 years to reinvent himself depending on the situation. Then go get a DC job and prove himself there. Then a DC job at a P5 or head job at a MAC-type school. Then the major school HC. If I am him, I go NFL. Once in, in for life. His career may fast track a bit there.

after watching the replay of the CMU-Minn. game , the DC at CMU did an outstanding job this year. They held Minn to 21 points and their D was ranked in the top 25 in many categories. Didn't realize that , but the bottom line is we have a Lame duck coach so who would come here anyhow.
