individual coaches and scenarios are different
but since we are possibly waiting on fleck,
i was thinking of the Mac coaches who made a similar jump in the last decade or two, just to compare.

this is what i can think of so far.
unfortunately some of the better ones did not get to finish out their careers.

Randy walker
Terry hoeppner
Jerry kill
Gary pinkel
Tim beckman
Darrell hazell
Turner gil
Al golden
Jim grobe
Dave doeren
Dave clawson
Matt campbell
Steve addazio (temple year 1 mac, year 2 big east)

Woody Hayes
Bo
Valid names to include, but, entirely different era and entirely different game when it happened with them.

The list provided was fairly solid...not so much with respect to the quality of the guys on it, but with respect to who was actually on it.

The list is pretty telling as well seemingly with respect to what you can hope for if you go that route...one would like to think that Purdue already learned that lesson or gained from that experience.

List of BigTen HC's and previous job:

Meyer - Florida (SEC)
Harbaugh - San Fran (NFL)
Dantonio - Cincinnati (Big East)
Ferentz - Baltimore (NFL) assistant
Franklin - Vanderbilt (SEC)
Chryst - Pitt (ACC)
Fitzgerald - Northwestern (BIG10) assistant
Riley - Oregon St (PAC12)
Durkin - Michigan (BIG10) assistant
Claeys - Minnesota (BIG10) assistant
Wilson - Oklahoma (BIG12) assistant
Smith - Tampa Bay (NFL)
Ash - Ohio St (BIG10) assistant

Fired BigTen HC's in the past 3 seasons and previous job:

Hazell (2016) - Kent St (MAC)
Edsall (2015) - UConn (Big East)
Flood (2015) - Rutgers (BIG10) assistant
Cubit (2015) - W. Michigan (MAC)
Beckman (2014) - Toledo (MAC)
Hoke (2014) - San Diego (MWC)
Pelini (2014) - LSU (SEC) assistant

The ones who have stuck generally had prior big league experience, whether as a HC or assistant. Note: Pelini was fired after a record of 39-17.

Ya a much better likelihood.
Only a few of the 13 from the Mac above were as desirable.

Of those, they all seemed to have the various necessary characteristics/it factors...
High character, good recruiter, football 'mind', etc
Hopefully we can get that as well

Pinkel had an amazing run at Mizzou.
Kill is still my pick. I came to S IL about the time the were ready to shut down their FB program because it was actually worse than Purdue's is now. Kill arrived and had them in contention for a national title within a couple of years. He was willing to take other school's trouble castoffs and made them into something more than they'd been. Left here and went to N IL and while not starting with a bottom feeder made them more competitive. I believe if his health had not been an issue Minny would be a perennial power in the B1G over time. Sometimes it's not how good you are but the breaks that go against you that limit your contributions.

Not sure how Hoeppner would have turned out. He seemed to be on the verge of turning IU around. It's certain that Lynch couldn't sustain the momentum. Fleck reminds me of him.

Are we counting the old big east on the list? I mean I can think of Kelly and Jones going from Central Michigan to Cincinnati.
