Why do we give out a scholarship for it is it really that hard that a backup center can't do it? I don't know how hard it is what do you guys think/know.

Long snapper is its own position. Regular centers usually are not very good at it.
Can many guys do it? Yes. Can many guys do it well? No. It's a much more important position than many think . . . until your team doesn't have one.

Go back and watch the Alamo Bowl against KSU.

It is its own skill.

I think its worth a schollie. It is difficult in the sense that you have to get the ball back there quickly, with a spiral, and get your head up quick enough to not get blasted and lead to a punt block.

Not only that, but what a lot of people don't realize is what they do after the snap is just as important. They have to move their ass down field on punts and try to make a play. I'm not sure you want your center doing those extra sprints during the game.

If you need anymore convincing or reasoning, there is a reason that the NFL carries this position specifically as well. And their rosters are a lot tighter than scholarships.

Cant hit the long snapper until he particpates in the play. More or less, you cant chuck them while they are defenseless.

Two long snappers that I personally knew, one older and one younger, from my very small hometown in Indiana had very long NFL careers and have very nice pension checks coming in and all they ever did was snap for punts and field goals! Both also had NFL careers in excess of ten years!

In fact, I think Chris Daniels ended up snapping the rest of that game after two botched snaps correct?

Yep. Special teams were an utter disaster that day (and a lot of games early on)

Good to know. I was wondering how they could possibly be that fast as I typed it.

I just knew a couple guys 15 years ago that told me about it and was impressed at how much percision the position demanded.

NFL team use a spot for one and they only only 53 spots.

And do you recall a bad snap in the past four years with Schmitt doing it? People thought it strange then too.

Yeah, Schmitt was REALLY REALLY good.

Really good.

So good, nobody knew about his contributions. That's the sign of a good LS.

He could also cover his ass off on that play and was usually the first guy on the scene to cover down the middle of the field.

One of the longest tenured NFL players by a single team in history was Patrick Mannelly, 18 years in the NFL for the Bears. They wanted him back for 19 but his body finally didn't feel up to it.

Ya, bad long snapping really cost us during the Rose Bowl year, too. Probably the reason why we lost to PSU, and bad punt snaps put us in a huge hole against Washington in the Rose Bowl.

A quality long snapper is worth a scholarship.

Having a son that does LS as well as playing center, it is difficult. They tried 2 other kids, but they could not get it there accurately or quickly. We went to a camp strictly for snapping and learned a ton, won a few awards as well. He likes doing it, except for the long runs and trying to avoid blockers. Plus being a true center, he isn't blazing fast, but fast enough.

Long Snapper is extremely important. Field Goals and PAT's can win or lose a game. If you think it isn't worth a scholly that shows an overall lack of knowledge of the game. If you're a good LS you're arguably the most important player nobody knows about.

It's not the easiest thing in the world. I've done it out of necessity and takes a lot of work. Guys are very deserving of that scholarship.
