I don't want to add to the negativity, but here is my humble look back at where this game was lost. Purdue entered the last 8 minutes of the game leading 71-66. Iowa had 8 fouls, putting Purdue in the bonus. Things were looking up. Purdue hadn't played very good defense for most of the night but was able to go toe-to-toe and then some offensively with Iowa.

Purdue was then outscored 17-7 in those final 8 minutes. Here are the results of each of the Purdue possessions in those final 8 minutes:

Mathias missed 3 pointer
V. Edwards missed 3 pointer
C. Edwards missed jumper
C. Edwards missed 3 pointer
Mathias missed 3 pointer
Cline MADE 3 pointer
Mathias MADE 2/2 FT
Cline missed 3 pointer
Mathias missed 3 pointer
Swanigan MADE jumper
Cline missed 2/2 FT
Thompson missed 3 pointer
Haas missed layup
Cline missed 3 pointer
Swanigan turnover
Swanigan missed jumper
Mathias missed 3 pointer

That is 10 3 pointers, only one of which was made. In that same span, Swanigan was 1 for 2. It is my belief that by the time it came down to those last few possessions, he had been effectively taken out of the game by his teammates. You could see his visible frustration when it was tied at 78 with just under 2 minutes left. Then to expect him to hit that game winning shot with 19 seconds left.. perhaps there were lingering effects.

I am not one who outright complains about 3 point shots. It is an important weapon of this team. It opens up the post. And we were effective shooting 3's for the first 32 minutes last night.. BUT when you are playing one dimensional and also not feeding your best player, it can come back to bite you.

IF he did say that in the huddle, and not follow it up with coaching actions....that is on coach too. One way good coaches enforce what he/she says is though substitution patterns....
You're right. Matt should totally be on the court, physically moving people in the right position and passing the ball for them. ::rollseyes::

Great analysis. There's plenty of blame to go around here but that's a brutal sequence of possessions. The team has to close out games like this to make a decent March run.

ya also...Jok 19 shots. Biggie 9.

Great. We'll just have to stock up on beer for the next game.
I'm never out of stock. Purdue football has taught me to never let it run dry.

Thanks for the painful but important recap of the events of the last 8 minutes. At the time, I thought most of those missed 3s were good shots. The 2 missed free throws by Cline were hard to take though. Iowa left us open on the outside to shut down Biggie and Haas and no one stepped up. We need one more consistent scorer to win these kinds of shootout games unless our defense somehow improves.

One thing that was a trademark of a lot of Purdue's teams in the past 20-30 years was that when shots weren't falling, we still played lock down defense and stayed in and won our share of games. The defense last night was downright embarrassing as it was against Minnie. It's hard for a Purdue fan to watch. Some thought that RayDay leaving was not a big deal, that his defense last year was poor, and that having another scorer/shooter in the game would more than make up for it. Halfway through the season, and in the BIG part of the schedule, I'm concerned about us ever being able to stop a BIG team in crunch time. I'm just a fan, not a coach like some of you, but it seems to me that whatever we are doing on defense isn't working and it's been like this all year. The combination of poor defense and cold shooting in crunch time is bad and one of those needs to be fixed.

I think you nailed it. We had the 3-pt shots. Those were open and usually we would hit them at a 40% rate, not at a 10% rate. Iowa gambled and won that they could jam our front line and we would miss from 3. They kept us jammed until we started hitting 3's, which we never did. The next team to do that might regret it.

I think you guys are giving Iowa's D too much credit for forcing these shots. I've added the shot clock times below. Iowa was indeed packing in the zone D. But I don't think our guards were really attacking it on many of these possessions. You can see most of the 3 pointers were shot with 12 or more seconds remaining, some with more than 20! Considering we were walking the ball up the court, most of these shots came within a few seconds of our half court offense. And most of these possessions there were no touches or dribble drives inside the arc.

When Biggie did get the ball after his outburst it was an easy entry pass into the high post, and he hit a jumper. The next time he got it in the high post he forced the dribble into a turnover. The last touch was a pretty good move and a shot that he'll make 4/5 times. That's 2 good looks on 3 touches. Not exactly impenetrable post defense. The team just made it a point to get the ball to him. If they could get him that look on that last critical possession, they could have done it on earlier possessions.

Again, not saying all the open 3's were bad shots, but we were very one dimensional for a critical 6 minute stretch there.

Well, you sure paint an ugly picture. ^^That's ugly FirstdownB. I mean, it does not really matter how good the look is when shooting 3's. The fact is, if you're willing to accept 10% and lose? And, "We'll get 'em next game"? It does not look good to be so one dimensional. It's sure not hard to game plan that. This must be addressed or we're at the mercy of living by the 3 and having that dictate our record. And, likely derail any tourney runs.

First of all, fatigue decreases shot percentage. Close shots have a generally higher percentage than those farther away. When shots where not going to Swanigan late in the Iowa game Painter should have replaced the four ex-Swanigan on the floor with players under orders to get the ball to him. Maybe then the message would have been clearly sent. This error is on Painter.

No it's not ALL on the coach. I saw him more than once yell at someone for taking a three.

And, yet they continued to shoot? Disobeying orders? And, allowed to stay on the court? So, the poor shooting was basically allowed to continue since Painter didn't take a stand. He's isn't in charge? He's recruited kids that don't listen then. It will always come back to the coach. He gets credit, IMO, when we win or lose. We can't brag about him in big wins if we're not willing to blame him for a bad loss. We just can't have it both ways. I'm sure folks would get all bent out of shape if we win the B1G, or reach a FF and some get on here claiming Painter had nothing to do with it. We'd see a total meltdown. If players are disobeying him, then yeah, maybe this season has nothing to do with him. Other than bringing in rebellious and misbehaving kids. Just sayin

You don't pull players from your best line up in crunch time for taking a shot that didn't go in. Listen to Painter's press conference, he thought the shots at the end were fine. I would have liked to see more patience as well but an open three against the zone with our percentage is a good shot. If we hit 40% as mathboy said we win the game. The shots were fine, other than the Cline miss and Dakota forced three sequence.
Last game people were praising PJ for the three after he had just missed one and Biggie kicked it back out. Cline gets raves for having no fear, Mathias getting praise for his shooting all year, Vince as well. Now, when they don't go in, they were bad shots and we shouldn't have taken them. Can't have it both ways.

You make an awful lot conclusions from the assumption that the players weren't listening to the coach.

So, which was it? He was yelling at them for the poor shooting? Or, did he think it's ok to continue to throw bricks? They either disobeyed, or, the continued poor shooting was allowed. Either way is on Painter. I have a problem with living and dying by the 3. Good coaches manage to find creative ways to produce high percentage shooting. The make in game adjustments to solve problems. In the sequence above, that is damning when shoved in your face is a stark reality and check. It's ugly to look at really.

I didn't say he was yelling at them for the threes. Twin said it. Why don't you actually listen to what Painter said in his presser or read about it. You're making assumptions based on no facts.
We don't live and die by the three. How many games have we lost because we shot our way out of the game from three? We actually are a great 3 point shooting team, have you noticed?
One more time. An open three against a zone with the way we shoot is not a bad shot. You can continue to ignore that fact and keep moving the goal posts if you like.
We missed the shots we normally make. You want to find someone to blame cause the team didn't win, usually the coach. We got it. But I'm not gonna blame the players for missing them nor am I gonna blame the coach for not pulling them out for missing them.

Wait, wait. Twin says he actually "heard" Painter yelling at them for those shots. I happen to believe him. You calling him a liar? Or, are "you" moving the goalpost? I don't need to hear him yelling. I don't need to have watched his presser to believe. When other Purdue fans/alum come here and tell me they saw or watched something, I tend to believe them. So, no, I'm not making assumptions, I taking those that I respect for their words. And, you saying we shot our way to wins, is pretty much what I'm talking about. And, yeah, we "can" shoot the 3 well. Yeah, I watch our games. That is sorta how I glean my opinions, along with some info others provide here. Basically, all of this is a false narrative, because you don't like my opinion. And, you're free to blame who you want, as am I. You aren't the sole owner of that. Painter probably was yelling at them. He probably did say what you said. So, with that, he's now wishy washy. Personally, I credit Painter for big wins...and blame him for poor losses. Don't make more out of it that it is.

thanks for the run down.
it is very telling there about our team choices offensively, especially down the stretch.

team 3fg is 40% as noted above.
but CS himself is 56% fg and 47% 3fg, and 78% from the line as he gets there the most.
(only DM is slightly better at 48% 3fg)

Wow.
I like Twin, seen him post for a long time here and other places. Not calling him a liar. Is that really something else you want to argue about?
So "you don't need to have watched his presser". The coach you are blaming for the loss speaks publicly and yet you don't feel you need to listen to him, instead taking a poster's word for it and using that as justification for your argument. Of course, you believe him, his statement supports your position. Nothing like getting all the facts.
You admit we shoot the three well but we shouldn't have shot them in that game. Ok.
We're done.

Twin said he "SAW" Painter yell at them for the shots, not "HEARD". Twin is not lying, you are.

We are one of the best 3-pt shooting teams in the country. I'd play the odds we hit at a better rate than we did against a zone that packed it in so Biggie couldn't shoot. Throw in and get a turn over. Then you'd be bitching that we weren't playing to our strength, 3 pt shooting. Sometimes I read the shit you post and think WTF?

I blame the coach because I consider him in charge. That should be easy. Yes, I admit we "can" shoot the 3 well, Supporting my position that we may live and die by it. And, the Iowa game supports that. A game I consider one we should have won had Painter made adjustments. He didn't. And, either yelled at players for bad shots, or said in a presser they were good....or both. Either combo is nutty IMO. How ever you wish to slice it, I blame Painter for the loss as I'd have credited him for adjusting and getting the win.

Builder, it was not a single shot that did not go in, it was a series as documented. Plus, isn't fatigue a factor and should it not be factored into decision-making?

Also, I can recall Knight pulling his team off the floor and replacing them when he felt that they were not executing his plan. It can, and, been done.

Woah......Twin didn't say "he actually heard" anything. Twin said he saw Painter yelling at players after shots. My assumption was he was yelling at them for taking a bad shot, shooting too quickly in the shot clock, etc.

I've always disliked the three pointer. It's a shot made at a lesser % than the two, and at the end of the game, or even at the 8 minute mark as someone else pointed out, Purdue didn't need to be shooting them, no matter what our % is or has been. At the end of the game, where a two keeps you in it, always take the higher % shot and that is a two pointer.

Well, we barely have enough players to practice, not sure we can do a complete change out of personnel. I don't recall Knight doing it in crunch time in a close game, could be wrong.
I'm not sure Painter can tell after the second missed 3..... Or the third........if the next one is going to go in. I mean, it would be great to know if the drought is going to continue. Don't know how that is known.
As far as fatigue, I agree it is a big factor. I know for a fact PJ was rested with Spike getting time.......and Carsen had been sitting as well. Can't speak to the others. Tell the people on here that complain when someone is sitting about fatigue, they seem to think these kids can play the whole game.

January '85 Knight benched all of his starters save Ewe Blab in a game.
Interesting fact about Knight:
In 1981, he almost left coaching to join CBS as the network's college basketball expert. But while he was negotiating, one of the starters from the 1981 championship team, Landon Turner, was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident. Knight could not -- would not -- leave Indiana then.

"If CBS's last offer had been their first, I would have gone," Knight said a year ago. "But before they made the last offer, Landon got hurt . . . "

As I stated afterward. I don't care if you "heard" or "Saw". The point is, I gathered, that in your opinion he was barking at shot selection. And, the further point is, stating that I respected your opinion. There are plenty of folks here that have opinions that I respect. The main point is, I don't want us living and dying by the 3. And, the last possessions that were basically laid out in front of us to see in bold print was not very smart IMO. And, I lay that at Painters feet. He either allowed the shots, or didn't and players ignored his orders. Either way, that's not good. And, if he did bark about shot selection, and then go on the presser and say the selections was fine, then he's wishy washy and I don't care for that either. I heap praise on Painter when games are won...especially if I consider it a big win. Therefore, I would expect everyone to respect that on the other side, I blame him for losses.

I've seen Keady, put a kid in a seat for a piss poor play. Not always for long, but enough to send a message.

Big difference just seeing the coach yell at a kid, and hearing what it was he said. All you are doing here is guessing at what was said. You are making stuff up about what was said.

We all know Cline, Mathias, and Carson have the green light to shot when open. We statistically have a 40% chance of hitting the shot. 10 tries should have netted us 4 baskets or 12 points. Plenty to win the game.

If Twin thinks Painter was yelling about shot selection and I believe him, that's my business. If someone else tells me Painter said in a presser the shots were fine, and I believe them that's also my business. If I believe both and think it makes him wishy washy that's again my business. You're just being a jackass about this because you don't like my opinion. And, also why you're not worried about other posters perceptions, but taking exception that I believe them at their word. How ridiculous is that? You're more pissed that I believe a comment than the original opinion. LOL!!!!! You're a riot!

Not pissed at all. Just pointing out the potential error in your perception. We all like to play at coaching here. If you are going to be critical, it's good to get the facts right. Me, I'm just trying to help.

It would be an "error" in Twins perception. The fact is, you're upset I believe his perception. It's selective outrage. That's all. You're taking a stand based on it being counter to your opinion. If I were opining with a position you agreed with....crickets.
