Over the past four games, we are shooting a combined 72-82 from the free throw line. That's 88% AS A TEAM! That's incredible.

This is jacked from a different post of mine in a different thread, but thought it deserved it's own thread.

There are only 3 games in our past 10 that we have shot under 16 attempts. One was the Nebraska loss (13 attempts), the Michigan loss (11 attempts) and the Rutgers win (13 attempts). So the Rutgers game can basically be thrown out - when we play a decent team and don't have many attempts, we don't seem to fare well.

In 6 of our last 9 games, we have attempted 19 or more free throws. And in those 6 games, we're shooting 84% as a team - remarkably efficient given this includes our big guys.

This is something that can really be a huge factor in tournament runs. While we have been a very good 3 point shooting team, we have so much success there and elsewhere because we can be balanced between 3 point, driving and interior play. We have to keep this up.

This is not a commonly talked about stat with the team, but we have to continue to be aggressive with the basketball and get to the line if we want to have success in March.

FT was WHY we won Sunday....in a game we did NOT play well and shot like crap. FT +10 difference can overcome a lot of problems.

I will amend the above to say our D was excellent yesterday....

You are right. It's a big factor in how Purdue plays. Any big that is an offensive threat better be able to shoot Freebies if he wants to play in the last 3:00 mins of a close game. See Happ for the result of not being capable on the line.

Purdue shot poorly from 3 but shot extremely well from everywhere else. 76% to be exact if you combine FTs and 2pt fgs, played pretty well defensively too and limited TOs. So I would say they played pretty well, but I'm a half full type guy.

This is a really good point. When the pushing and shoving in the post gets called tightly, it really helps Purdue.

Another key stat is that Purdue is second lowest in the nation in FT attempts allowed per opponent FG attempt. Purdue has put itself in great shape in a lot of games by playing defense without fouling.

When FT defense is combined with Purdue efficiency at the free throw line, free throw differential is a huge factor for Purdue, much like three point shot differential also is.

VE has been stellar as well; 17-17 the last four games, three of which were on the road.

Purdue played good defense yesterday after a few shaky games. But you're right, the coaches have taught the players how to play defense without fouling - which is much easier said than done these days. That being said, in the NCAA Tournament we're going to see a wide variety of refs. We'll need to adjust well to how those games are called to maintain that edge.

While you're right (we shot 57% if you take out 3 pointers), the issue is that when you're not hitting 3s - we shot 19 of them. So that was 15 misses. It's not this simple, but if you didn't take half of those missed 3s, and shot 2s - statistically we would have scored 7-8 more points.

Purdue's typically done pretty well in terms of the number of 3s they take. Yesterday was probably a few too many given the lack of success. But NW was clogging up the lane, so we had some looks.

I recall Purdue shooting poorly in that gym in the past. I wonder if will lose a bit of its advantage in that respect with the renovation.
